Indians For Guns

hi there guys

i am karthik.. in the army.. armored corps.. and an avid gun follower since the age of 9.
recognise most mil weapons.. not sporting ones.. incl hand guns, rifles, smgs, machine guns, tank weapons and tanks and love to discuss them.

looking for a .30 cal M1 for myself.

If anybody has any inputs lemme know

I see that you are looking for an M1 .30 Carbine; from what I have seen in the posts at IFG it could be a difficult weapon to obtain (license wise) and that the ammunition is nearly impossible to obtain? Is this a practical choice? Would appreciate your comments.

However, it is one of my favorite rifles too, purely emotional connection, evokes lots of nostalgia! My dad owned one but, it is still stuck in an armory for the past 28 years or so - I haven't been able to get my hands on it, yet.

Have you tried applying under "transfer of family heirloom" basis? Other than the VIP/ VVIP category of "threat to life which cannot be suitably defended with a NPB firearm" there is currently no other category under which PB firearm licenses are being issued...

@Abhijeet, thanks. Did try for it way back in 1983, as the rifle was specifically willed to me by my dad, but at an interview, the district collector quickly refused me permission as he thought I was too young to take up such a responsibility. I have not been to take up the matter any further as I was mostly out of the country; now, after so many years, I doubt if I will be able to provide even a basic proof of address in India!

I will make another attempt this time through my younger brother who is based in Bangalore and is a member of the KSRA.

i have been released my NSP weapon from the Ordnance Depot at Jabalpur: and you guessed it right it is the .30 M1. i too have a emotional connect with the weapon, but that is purely from Band of Brothers/ Saving Pvt Ryan. the weapon is a beaut and i have to collect it by the end of July from the depot. will be looking to do it up and make it look good. willhit upon the site for ammo info!

Thanks Haji - you are quite right; Baljit has also provided me with similar advise - import the M1 into Canada.

i was more willing to share here AFTER i got a weapon, and now that it has happened, i guess there will be a lot to learn in the .22" to 9 mm range of weapons. am more qualified at the 125mm range of systems
any idea of guys who help out with attaching a picatinny rail or a weaver rail on a M1?

plus the ammo question always remains!!

Karrotkillroy, congratulations on your acquisition. Just confused is it a .30 M1 Carbine or a .30-06 M1 Garand? For ammunition you can pick up your quota limit from any civilian dealer OR purchase the ammunition from the army (cheaper option). There are plenty of drop in parts available for the M1 Garand and some for the M1 Carbine as well, try searching on Brownells for the Garand and on Fulton's Armoury for the Carbine.
