I have been researching Indian Wild Life Act to check out which animal items are legal and which are not to possess/trade and found which this interesting forum very fortunately.

You could buy skins, furs, etc. that predate the wildlife act (1972) provided you get a certificate with the item.

Any item post '72 would be considered a by-product of poaching (unless you get a government certificate allowing possession of the article) and will earn you a long stint in jail.

1.Every wildlife product including shahtoosh shawls, has to be registered.It is taken that the animal was shot before the ban on hunting.If the wildlife dept. has any doubts it is free to take samples to verify whether the hunting trophy/wildlife product is pre ban(legal) or post ban (illegal)

2.Sale/purchase of wildlife products is prohibited.
