Love this Place!!!

Hi All,

My Name is Rahul, and I have been browsing through the forums of IFG since many days. I am in typesetting, BPO training, placement and aviation business.

I love Going outdoors, cars, bikes and snakes!!

I have this fantasy for guns since my childhood. Money and surroundings were never favorable, in spite of my 1st cousing being Col. in Army (8 assam rifles) and my Dad being in Airforce.

Now I have applied for license, but my wife is dead against it as per her only Gundas need guns

I have already done many stupid things like:

Getting stuck in a river:




Catching a snake on road same night we got stuck




Thankfuly I guess this snake was just a simple rat snake...



So my need of gun would be because of following these two reasons apart from the desire to have a small handgun:

1. I travel by road across the country. I went to Mumbai from Delhi by my enfield 500 10 months back. Have traveled through out the west coast of country by Road along with my wife and kids. At times there are certain patches where I think A bit of self defense equipment can come in handy.

2. I have this dream of going out in wilderness and setting up tents and spend few days over there with my son. Waiting till October to lay my Hands on Gurkha ( http://www.indiansforguns.com/viewtopic.php?t=2018) to start with this. Again I feel a handy gun might be useful, against animals or unwanted people around me.

I have observed some members have poked fun at new comers about their lack of knowledge, but I think we all were new to the things in which we are expert now.

I have joined this forum and reading people's comment because I want myself to be responsible gun owner and be sure and mentally prepared to have the gun. Hope I would be with experts here soon.

what the hack were u up to gtting stuck in river? no wonder ur lady is dead against u having firearms.

must have been a great ride from bombay to del on the bullet. something i want to do but not got around it.

there are no ex perts here. (ex means has been)

with kids around take care with any firearms, take resposibilty and never have firearms laying around where there are kids, try to get a trigger lock.

as i said there are no ex perts, but many are here who apply common sence and knowledge.

train ur kids to be ware of firearms.

we went in side the core area of Corbett ... and got stuck actually in evening. We spent the night over there. This happened in the last week of November 2007. It was cold and we could not keep the fire burning after 3 AM. We had driven from delhi, after checking in Hotel we decided to embark upon this adventure. We had no dinner and no booze and no clothes as we had kept all that at hotel.

Most scary night in my life time....

After 3 we spent the night in Safari, with water flowing from one end to other... we had like 4" of water inside the vehicle. With all clothes wet and wind blowing you can imagine the situation...

There is nothing wrong with your dream but here are a few points you need to mull over:

1) If you want to take your gun along when travelling across the country, you will need an all India licence. Not exactly easy but not impossible either.

2) Going into or through a reserve forest area with a firearm, without explicit permission to do so, is forbidden.

3) Shooting an animal, even in self defence, may not land you in jail but you will have a hard time convincing the wildlife authorities that it was in self defence. Expect a court case or your wallet getting a good deal lighter. If it happens to be a Section 1 or 2 animal you may very possibly find yourself behind bars.

4) Shooting at a human being in selfdefence must always be your last option. Either way, what will follow such an act may make you wish you had never bought a gun.

I am not trying to discourage you from gun ownership but you must understood that there are some very strict rules to be followed when it comes to owning a gun.

Last but not least, do not handle snakes you are unable to identify, especially when you are not qualified to do so.

^^^ Thanks Mack The Knife, I will keep your points in mind. Of course will have lot of self contraint. Already Manu Sharma (Jessica lal case) has set an example of what one shud not use their gun for.

But I am sure if life of my near dear ones are threatened enough to cross the line I would, wont care if it is a gun or a stick or just my hands. And as I said the more I will be here listening to you all, more responsible I would become with the best of advises I am getting over here.

Actually I am glad that there is a place like this where one can learn.

I don't want to crucify you but please don't believe all the advertising that you see. In places like Corbett please get a guide and listen to his advice no matter how safe it may sound.

Enjoy your adventurous spirit but always think of being safe. Specially when you are the one everyone depends on for the outing.

Hello Rahul!

Carrying even a licensed firearm inside a National Park,Wildlife Santuary or a Forest Reserve without the permission of the concerned Wildlife Warden/Park Director/DFO can amount to intent to poach against relevant sections of the Wildlife Act.Which is a non - bailable offence.

Handling the snake was totally uncalled for.

Trying to ford a river with Grade III Rapids could have got the occupants of the vehicle "Killed".

Keeping your escapades in mind, think twice before getting a firearm.Especially a handgun.

I donot wish to disuade you from applying for an arms license or acquiring a firearm - It is just that firearm ownership is one of the most responsible issues of life.

On the flip side members here neither tolerate nor suffer fools who disregard rules or make incorrect statements. Hang around and do post often.

Not impressive. stupid things to do with family at stake...cant identify a possible ford

Before all of you crucify me ... there was no family. Just four long lost college friends. We know our limits but this happened because we had good enough confidence on the vehicle.

Fine I am no expert on snakes but have handled enough domestic snakes to not to feel sleazy with a snake in my hand. I wont handle it like a pro but I wont be shaking either.

I really appreciate the concerns of the all the members.

Ngrewal Sahib, it does happen. I have seen few quotes where I think experienced members should have controlled themselvs. I would have searched and posted those comments for you, but I am leaving for Singapore to attend air show, once I am back we can talk about this.
But just think abt this you are not believing or considering the concern I felt, even though this is a only small percentage/ negligible cases...

Also At the same time if you chk the title of post it will make it pretty clear that I am loving this place and really appreciate the concerns and fraternity this place has!!
