Hi Guys,

I am Prashanth from Chennai. I have been a member of IFG for a while and been following the posts for a very long time Though i have not posted on IFG more than a couple of time. I would like to thank all of you as you have been a treasure trove of knowledge for me. If i may be a little off topic here, I have always wanted to take up shooting but have been unable to due to certain constraints. The last time i fired a gun was a Savage .22 HiPower which had been sold off a long time ago.

With the recent demise of my grandfather, my role model who will be missed, has bequeathed me a Webley .177 Hurricane Airgun, and new found freedom as i have just started working, i wish to take up shooting seriously. I however wish to learn the basics as well nuances of shooting before taking up a license. Is there anyway i can do this? Are there courses conducted by the Madras rifle Club for on members for this purpose. Also, Is there anyone who can help me out with the correct procedures to obtain the License and guide me along the way.

Looking forward to hearing from distinguished from Chennai. :)

friend,
most rifle clubs teach you how to use an air gun and not a firearm.but there are several topics in our forum which might help you.http://indiansforguns.com/viewforum.php?f=8

Thanks a lot sir... I have been firing Airguns for a while now. I was hoping on moving on to firearms, just to have my aspirations nipped in the bud by news that the new commissioner of police has stopped issuing new licenses. I was just wondering, though I have a idea of Gun Handling and and from my basic weapon training in NCC, how about taking apart a rifle for cleaning??

Prash, we are glad you are here and hope that you can find a good spot in Chennai to practice your handgun skills! Welcome to IFG.

By the way, if you see Rajinikanth there, please say hello for me, as I am a great fan of his! :-)

Don't mean to put you off but owning in firearm in India does not allow you to use that firearm much because of restrictions on how much ammunition you can buy or possess at a given time and lack of any safe lace to practice shooting in an urban area.

I think one thing to do is to undergo a CRTC - or Civilian Rifle Training Course. Your local police station may be able to advise you on where you can do that in Chennai. Some people do that in police ranges and others in a club. I am certain there must be a rifle association/club somewhere in your city where you can become a member and then use there facilities for shooting. The KSRA shooting range in Bangalore provides CRTC followed by membership and they have air rifles, 0.22 rifles and pistols, and a clay pigeon shooting range that members can practice with. There is a police verification step before the CRTC and membership, Those who own firearms can bring their own and you can shoot more ammunition in the range in one day than you are allowed to own in a year.

dear All, am new member to IFG.

I bought a Precihole brand Orion sx-100 .22 air rifle couple of month ago and seriously looking for a place to practice.
I finally found Tamil nadu police 3rd battalion @ Veerapuram allowing public to practice in there shooting range.
I have been there couple of days ago, place is very nice. trainer also available for new shooters.
10m / 25m and 50 mts available.
Charges are very minimal. except the distance every other things are good.

all Chennai shooters now no need to wait for CHENNAI RIFLE CLUB membership.

All the best.

Often you'll have rumors about the city police not willing to issue new licenses, but there are few new licencees i heard off.you can practice an airgun, but so far i haven't come accross CRTC in chennai.best way to go might be to apply for the licence and wait!?
