Hello friends

Post by absinroy » Sat Jun 30, 2012 8:44 pm

I'd like to introduce myself as an excited new comer to this wonderful website. I am a senior citizen ho has spent all of 40 years in Communication & Marketing field. But all along, my true love has been the jungle and wildlife. An avid hunter in my youth (Saranda forest Orissa; Kaimur Range - UP/Bihar; Palamau forest, Bihar etc), I gave up the sport as soon as it was declared unlawful...and opted for Conservation & photography in a big way. I have been Advisor to Gov. of Gujarat for Conservation of the Asiatic Lion. Though frustrated ith policy makers, I worked for 4 years with an NGO in the Gir area and helped pioneer 'well barricading' in a big way. I have also studied the Tiger and other wildlife very closely over the years...taken groups of Rotarians and families to all leading wild life parks in order to inculcate a love for wild life and wild places in their hearts. Have handles the full range of weapons that came to hand as many in my family owned them : .450/400 dbbl by Jeffries; .458 Winchester Magnum; .375 Winchester magnum; .318 Accelerate Express by Westly Richards; .405 Winchester; Winchester.300 magnum; Westley Richards .425; etc etc ... and of course .20 gauge, .12 bore shotguns of leading makes like W W Greener; BSA; Cogswell Harrison etc.. Still am holding on to my Mauser >30/06 -- a fantastic weapon...with a sturdy and well balanced Geco .12 bore dbbl and a .25 FN Browning vest-pocket automatic. Have a great library of wildlife books and am a personal friend of some of the greatest authorities on wild life, world-wide. It's my good luck I feel. So this web site is an answer to my prayers...as the best perfume in the world (for me)is the smell emanating from a fresh fired .12 bore Eley Kynoch cartridge !!

Hello Roy,

Its wonderful to have a person with your wide knowledge and long experience on board. I look forward to interesting and informative insights through your posts. I have never handled a .425 Westley Richards and would love to have your views on this rifle and cartridge.

Regards.

Hello,

Great to have a question on the .425 -- though I used it last about 40 years ago. It belonged to a rich landlord from UP and I had occasion to use it on a number of shikars. It is quite a robust rifle and more suitable for tall people I felt (concerning the balance). The snub-nosed 410 Gr cartridge was also a good stopper.... whether thin-skinned or thick-skinned game was concerned. However, my personal view is that the cartridge-construction did not allow for 'bone crushing' and penetrating property. The bolt action was quite smooth, though a trifle long. It was a good weapon to carry in the dense forests.Though everyone referred to it as a 'magnum', I feel it was more of a sales gimmick

Hello,

Thank you very much for an informative post on the .425 Westley Richards. The Westley Richards gun rooms in Selly Oaks were very close to the University of Birmingham when I was there during 1991-92. Incidentally the Ariel motorcycle factory was also located in Selly Oaks but had closed down when I was there.

I have heard that while the top quality models from Westley Richards were superbly made, their cheaper range was of much inferior quality. Would you agree with this?

You are absolutely right in saying that while the .425 was a powerful cartridge it cannot properly be termed a magnum.

Regards.

Welcome aboard and do post often especially your opinion on future of conservation and wild life in india and regale us with stories of hunting in past. Those were really nice guns you owned and handled saw a .458 winchester at Cabela US few days back. Actually a gentleman from Hyderabad shot a tiger with it in UP recently - reportedly it was causing nuisance.

Do post pictures of your guns

Cheers

It's extremely nice to hear from an expert like you.
Im a jungle lover , wildlife enthusiast and avid photographer too
with the back ground of a target shooter from West Bengal .
I am based in Calcutta and would love to meet you in person .

By the way your " Best fragrance" matches with none other than the great John Hunter as he expressed in his legendary book "Hunter".
Feeling is absolutely mutual and so we belong to the same family :)

Would look forward to hear from you soon.
