Hi Friends,

I am a Software Engineer by profession and work in Delhi. But i am on a Sabbatical working for social & developmental reforms in my home state Uttarakhand. I have always wanted to own a gun. If it was allowed and i had enough money, i would have purchased all kinds of guns from snipers to bomb launchers to hand guns :-)

Well fortunately/unfortunately we can only buy a few models of handguns. I am now starting to browse and post on this forum as i am applying for my license. Here my some questions i will be obliged if people can answer for me :

1) How much time it takes me to get arms license ?
2) What is the good less expensive handguns i can guy ? I saw the http://ofbindia.nic.in/index.php?wh=Purchase&lang=en . The link talks of only 4 handguns 0.22 revolver, 0.32 revolver, 0.32 pistol

3) Once you have an arm and license, Is it a problem for you to keep it ? I have heard that people say that once you have arms license you have lot of headaches due laws and regulations.

4) Are there restriction on where and when and how i can carry my arm ? Like can i keep it in my pocket ? Can i keep it in my car ? Any restrictions ?

I am pleased to be part of the forum and i shall be active browser here.

Thanks

Geegal, welcome to IFG -- we are glad to see you here. When you speak of wanting to own all kinds of guns, that is something most of us can understand -- there is a real joy to owning and collecting firearms.

I will let others comment on your questions regarding a license. But regarding what kind of handgun to purchase, consider what you want to use it for. If being able to shoot and cost are both issues, you cannot go wrong with a .22. They are fun to shoot, the best thing for learning fundamental shooting technique, cheap to shoot, and ammunition is readily available.

If you've got other ideas in mind, let us know and we can go from there.

Again, welcome and enjoy the boards.

Welcome to IFG.
1) How much time it takes me to get arms license ?
There is no fixed time for the issue of license. Depending on various "factors" it can take anything from few months to few years. "Ordinary" citizen would usually consider himself lucky if he is "granted" arms license within 6 months.
2) What is the good less expensive handguns i can guy ? I saw the http://ofbindia.nic.in/index.php?wh=Purchase&lang=en . The link talks of only 4 handguns 0.22 revolver, 0.32 revolver, 0.32 pistol
This has already been answered by timmy
3) Once you have an arm and license, Is it a problem for you to keep it ? I have heard that people say that once you have arms license you have lot of headaches due laws and regulations.
A lot depends on the perception of the individual. For one person one thing can appear to be a "problem", the same thing may not appear to be a "problem" for some other person.
4) Are there restriction on where and when and how i can carry my arm ? Like can i keep it in my pocket ? Can i keep it in my car ? Any restrictions ?
You can carry as you feel like openly or hidden under clothes etc. within the area validity of your license. You can surely keep the firearm in your car but you will also have to make sure that thieves do not steal it from there. It is always better to keep the weapon on your person or keep it securely locked in almirah etc. You may find some restrictions about carrying firearms in some government buildings etc., usually you will find that written at their entrance.
