Hello shooters!
I'm Surej from Bangalore. I just signed up. Been a gun/weapon enthusiast since childhood.
Lately I bought two .22 air rifles from Dubai. Was looking for help in the internet on bringing them over, and lo! hit on IFG.
I followed the guidelines posted here. Right now they're in the Bangalore Customs safe room at the new airport. I'm doing the needful to get them out.
Thanks to all members for the valuable insights.
Cheers,
Surej

Re: Hello shooters!
Welcome Surej,
Congrats on getting air rifles. Please keep up posted how things go with customs. I got one air gun from US and followed the legal procedure to get it out. There is a thread in the forum about same, hope you read that.
Welcome once again and keep coming here.

Welcome, Surej. Do post about your experiences and also your tale of the men in white (customs).

Jeff Cooper advocated four basic rules of gun safety:
1) All guns are always loaded. Even if they are not, treat them as if they are.
2) Never let the muzzle cover anything you are not willing to destroy.
3) Keep your finger off the trigger till your sights are on the target.
4) Identify your target, and what is behind it.

Re: Hello shooters!
Thank you, gents.
I've a Diana Model 460, and a Gamo Viperskeet, both .22, with the men in white. . I brought these dismantled, stocks and barrels in 2 suitcases. The Diana and Gamo scopes, triggers, trigger guards, and screws came with me in checked-in baggage without any problems. Had to supply info on the guns and seek the EK Group Security's and the Pilot's permission to bring over these. Once in Blr airport, four armed men escorted me to men in white to detain the goods at around 2.30 AM. I was treated with coffee, and was given the letter to the Commissioner of Police.
I'm getting my Indian driver's license address updated to my current address in Bangalore. I plan to use my DL and Indane gas connection papers as proof of residence. Of course, I can use my rental agreement too, tho, not my Passport as it shows me belonging to another state.
Once my address proof's ready, I plan to apply for KSRA membership, with the application attested by SI from the local police station.
Hope that this document'll prove me as a bonafide gun enthusiast, to the ACP who'd examine my guns.
Please guide me with your thoughts and opinions.

2. Indane gas bill is enough as Address Proof - I know since my verification got over today morning. If required you can throw in your rental agreement too.
3. The KRSA membership process is slightly different - Details can be had here on the forum - or on http://www.ksra.in/html/joinus.htm.

Re: Hello shooters!
Kb100, the letter to the Comm. Office say's thus:
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
To,
The Commissioner of Police
Bangalore City,
Arms Section,
Infantry Road
Bangalore
Sub: Customs-Detention of Air Gun for verification-reg
It is to inform that an international passenger by name Shri ...., holder of Indian passport No. .... alighted from EK 568 from Dubai on 15.05.2010. During the course of check of his baggage it was found that he was carrying Two Air guns Model (1) Diana Airgun Model 460 Magnum SL no. .... with pellets (2) Gamo Viper Skeet no..... On inquiry, the said passenger replied that he has brought the said Air Gun for his own use for sports.
The said Airguns have been detained for verification of the Caliber allowable under Arms Act. Therefore it is requested to depute an officer for verification of the legality of the possession of the said Air gun by the passenger.
Signed.
ASSISTANT COMMISSIONER OF CUSTOMS
BENGALURU INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT: BANGALORE
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Please note that I was NOT carrying any pellets.
1. Any idea where's the DCP's office located? Is it the CAR office in Herohalli, Bangalore?
2. Will I face problems becoz of the .22 calibers? I might've to pay duty, I was told so by a Customs officer.
3. Wonder whether I must carry the screws and triggers to assemble them there for DCP's verification, along with some pellets to avoid dry firing?

Re: Hello shooters!
I think if you were not carrying pellets you should not have accepted a letter which said you did. The Legal Eagle's will be able to shed more light on this.
The second part is simple enough - from what I have read one of two things is likely to happen.. they might do a dead wood test and either release the rifle with duty (if it passes), or detain it and ask you too produce an arms license. In case of the latter I doubt if you will be given the time it takes to procure one... and even if they do the demurrage the customs dept may charge can be prohibitive. IF it does come to that and it does prove economically un-viable, ask them to permit you to take it back to Dubai.
I think both scenarios have been documented on the forum... The seniors will be along presently to clarify further.
