A cape gun of some de.scription? Is that small black cartridge a 12 ga.? It looks minuscule in comparison!

Not a Cape Gun.........but you are right in thinking that the `small` black cartridge is a 12-Bore ! ( and would drop straight through the barrels of this thing ! )
Definitely NOT a Baker O/UP

Ah... saw the three cartridges together and assumed that they were intended ammo for the gun, hence thought it's combination gun of some type... What is the calibre of those monster rounds? 4 bore?
Cheers!

Yes it`s a 4-Bore.
Now how about dealing with the rest of the details ?

maybe one of the weapon Samuel Baker shot the elephants with in late 1870s. He says "it spun me around and gave me hellova headache after each shot."

I don't know what it is but it must be shot by a guy with no nose judging from the LOP of that stock!

The LOP is quite normal Mark - you have to consider just how big this gun is.
Yes, It`s a 4-Bore wildfowler Nagarifle. NOT a punt gun as can be seen from the fact that it is full-stocked and has conventional triggers.
26lbs ( 11.81 kg ) and 36 inch barrels.
So when was it made ? I won`t ask the name of the gunmaker as no-one will be able to guess that.

I`m away for the weekend shortly so I`ll give you the answer now:
The gun was custom built by Myres in 1980.
YES 1980.
Asif, here`s an even scarier detail: The gun is nitro proof.
The only nitro proof 4-Bore shotgun that I`ve ever heard of.
You fancy shooting this thing ? !!!
Mark you were correct. After examining the distance from the pistol grip to the triggers I decided that the LOP had to be on the short side. The stock was deliberately made short in order that the gun can be pulled very tightly into the shoulder and to negate movement as much as possible. Both in order to manage recoil.

By the way, if this thing was mine I`d want a HUGE pad on the butt !

Woh Grumps ! Butt pads will not do.... If I'm the owner, I'd regard a hydraulic buffered antiaircraft cradle mount, a reasonable parallel investment
