Out of place

On my second long stay in India (arraigning to get married, formalities with the Consulate General of Australia etc., etc,) I stayed at the YMCA in what was then Bombay (Mumbai).
On the first morning I wandered into the Dining Hall for breakfast dressed in casual Indian clothes, loose cotton pants and kurta, the room was full of local men in western shirts and trousers.
I sat down and after I’d placed my order with the waiter, the chap next to me, after the usual pleasantries said, “Excuse me, Sir, but may I ask, why are you wearing Indian dress?”
” Well, I am in India, why are you wearing European dress?”
He looked a bit nonplussed for a moment, then grinned, “Well, I never thought of it that way before.”
