A young man in a rural area was reaching his 16th birthday and the custom in the family was to buy the young man a firearm.
The young boy protested. He said "Papa, I am a peaceful person. I do not hunt. I don't need a gun."
The father replied "That is nonsense. What are you talking about? Everyone in our family has guns. We always have."
"But Papa" the boy replied "I don't like the idea of having a gun. Some one could get hurt. I want a watch instead.
"A watch?" the father asked.
"Yes, Papa. I want a watch instead of a gun. I can keep up with time. I can make sure I get places on time. I know long it will be before I have to be somewhere, and people will be impressed when they look at the watch on my arm. If someone asks me what time it is I can point to the watch and tell them." the boy said, with a satisfied and self-assured smile.
"Look son" Papa said sternly " In a few years you get married. In the middle of the night someone breaks into your house. What are you going to do? Point at the watch and say. "It's time for you to go'"

Son's reply: Look here Dad. When many years down the line, I get married and like any other married gent get into a heated argument with my wife - what do you think I would like to see in her hand -
1. A watch and "Is this the time to get home ?" or
2. A gun and "I bet you snuggled up to that Betty all this time, didn't ya ?"
