For someone who is totally failing to get the (lack of) logic in Mumbai Police's Quixotic snipper exercise, despite the number of IFG members pointing it out to you, you sure seem keen to display your witty side and launch personal broadsides eh?rajveer wrote: Lots of good wishes for u , u are not only amazing but increadible.

We are responsible gun lovers who believe in the right tool for the right job. Mumbai police acquiring a .50 cal weapon for urban combat is rank stupid. Period.

Re: Help sought in "deadly Weapons" use training
Sir the Mumbai police is not using it in any urban combat ,
they have just one in thier arsenal, so what is wrong in that. If logic about high power weapon in untrainned hands goes what about .3006 and .315 rifle in our hands, what would happen if someone using for self defence miss a shot.
I intend to say pls dont mock the police for eveything. And the report over which we r reacting says the police force dont have proper range and trainner to learn this new weapon. Now the mumbai police is taking few steps to arm it self with modern day weapon, and we as a gun loving community are bussy making fun of them. What would be a better option for the police chief of mumbai getting just one .505 snipper devloped by DRDO for his force.
Regards.

Please dont play the low salary card which is used by cops to justify all their actions.satrycon wrote:with their ridiculously low salaries, i wonder how they would ever have any motivation
when the admission procedure for cops or exams for state or national cadre or whatever is advertised, there is salary printed in the advert.
anyone applying tor the post is aware of the salary they are going to get.
Never ever has there been a salary cut after a person joining the force.
The reason of printing the salary is for any applicant to make an informed decision before applying. Once someone applies, it is an assumption that one is aware of the salary and willing to do whats expected of him to the fullest at the advertised salary.

Re: Help sought in "deadly Weapons" use training
As many people in this post have pointed out, the .50 caliber is sheer overkill in an urban environment. Not only that, it is highly dangerous to use it in an urban setting.
Let me put it as plainly as possible:
We won't even talk about Armor Piercing and other special loads in this cartridge. A human body, several human bodies, a concrete block, several concrete blocks, an 4 cylinder Aluminum engine block, a poured concrete wall, a car, a truck...etc; none of these are obstacles to the penetrating capability of the standard FMJ bullet fired by this cartridge.
If you shoot a man with this, it will pass through him, go through both walls of the house behind him (endangering everyone in the house who might be in its path), through the car parked in the driveway and quite possibly into the house behind that. It would be criminally irresponsible to use this weapons system in a crowded city like Mumbai.
You say they won't use this in the city. Then why would an urban police force even need something like that in their arsenal? If they have it, they will try to use it. When you have a hammer, every problem starts to look like a nail.

Re: Help sought in "deadly Weapons" use training
If this weapon is used wisely after taking precautions, it can produce desired results. For example if fired from a high rise building towards a target on ground hiding in room or behind a brick wall, automobile etc. can be easily hit without any fear of collateral damage. If one reads the news reports about recent fighting in Libya, many fighters are using anti aircraft guns from a safe distance to easily neutralize snipers hiding behind walls or similar fortifications.

Re: Help sought in "deadly Weapons" use training
True enough. But I don't really think they were worried about "collateral damage", or having to explain to the press. Plus, that' what they had available. A hostage situation in a metropolitan area can't really be compared to a civil war. Naga's beloved 105 would have been even better. A light tank would really be ideal, protecting the police sniper while taking out the miscreants hiding behind cover.goodboy_mentor wrote:If this weapon is used wisely after taking precautions, it can produce desired results. I have seen a documentary on snipers, posted here on IFG, wherein a sniper shoots a couple of terrorists hiding behind a wall using this ammunition.May be,I do not know for sure, the .50BMG does have a very specific application in urban environments.
