Indians For Guns

I found Bob Brownell's long out of print Gunsmith Kinks III, the final volume that he edited before his death, at a small book store in Lincolnwood. The book is fantastic and has several very easy to understand hints and instructions on home gunsmithing and on building jigs etc at home for this kind of work. I bought it for the princely amount of $ 4.98. I hope to read it and then pass it on to friends in India, especially to a friend here who has done some brilliant work and has generously done this for many others on these forums.

If anyone has other book recommendations etc, please post them here.

I think the best general gunsmithing book for India is a 2 volume set called "Modern Gunsmithing", By James V Howe (of Griffin and Howe)

Originally published in 1935 or so, it has a wealth of information of how to do things using hand tools, tons of recipes for all sorts of solutions (bluing, browning, cleaning, lubricating, machining, etc)

The last edition of the Howe book was published in 1954 as a single volume. I have heard that there were microfilm versions that were subsequently released though I could not find any information on the net. That is why the bhook is so expensive.

The bookshop I went to has some fantastic books on knife making as well as bowmaking. Would you like to have those? Inder has happily agreed to bring them back. Will be going there tomorrow and could pick them up. Just let me know. As I am all thumbs, this kind of stuff could be good reading but wouldn't be much use for me. Am not into bowhunting and knives anyway. But, of course, I'll be happy to get what I can for you.

Yes, Mehul, I would definitely like to have one book each on knife and bow-and-arrow making. I would prefer to start my knife making using the stock removal process rather than forging.

The emphasis has to be on simplicity of explanation with good illutrations and no high value books please. A second hand copy would be just fine.

Got a bit of work at the moment but will look up the net for some recommendations and post if I find something appropriate. If I don't come up with something it would be best to ask the shop owner.

Have found a few good knife making books on Amazon and may place an order for them after I return from Delhi early next year.

Just get me Brownell's book. That should suffice for the present.

Yep he did, Nice to know a friend from my other brotherhood but i am really surprised how he recognized me from Bulltech. Its been close to two years now since I last posted there..
