Replacing IHP 25 Leather washers with Synthetic ones

I just finished replacing leather piston and breech seals on an old IHP 25 in .177.
Initially I used motor oil and found her detonating and giving around 550fps.
Stripped and replaced the breech seal with a o ring from hardware shop packed with a sanded bakelite washer.
The piston seal is a new one type available. got it from M.Saleh for 25/- I left the white spacer behind it as piston was not moving freely in the tube with it. What is the function of the rear spacer ?
Now she is giving 485, 490, 500fps and of course does not diesel.
Used 100 grade silicon oil on the washers and moly grease on the main spring.
Interestingly when I tried to fit a new 30 coil 26cm Cherokee spring in the IHP 25 it would not cock and the sear and piston would not engage so went back to the old spring. Any ideas to remedy this ? Or Have I been sold the wrong spring ?
