What TOP HAT does on springer?

Post by tirths » Thu Oct 23, 2008 2:42 pm

Dear All,

I'm still not totally sure what the top hat does - does it sit inside the piston and act as a top buffer/guide between spring end and piston removing the metal-to-metal contact?

I know some rifles don't need 'em including Diana and HW, and also Terry Robb's kit doesn't mention a top hat at all.

Your opinion counts!!

It acts as a spring guide but in front. The length is usually a quarter of that of the rear spring guide. In some cases they are made of metal and may even act as a piston weight. They also dampen or totally eliminate spring twang.

Do not deal with T. Robb.
