Today i oiled the leather breech seal of a friends air rifle. However, on first few shots, there was heavy dieseling. Is this common? I used the normal gun oil used for cleaning bores etc.

Leather washers need a bit of dieseling to perform. But if the dieseling is too high and continues then it is a problem.
wait for around 20 - 30 pellets and see if it reduces.
When you say normal gun oil do you mean Singer machine oil?

I believe its the same Singer Machine oil but sold by Gunsmiths labelled as Gun oil for removing rust and bore residues. The first 2-3 shots gave up a lot of smoke and sounded like rifle shots. Also, now the breech seal looks completely dry which i believe is because the oil all got burnt up almost.
