12 bore trouble

I have a J.stevens sbbl 12 bore made in usa. the problem is that the firing pin is loose and slides in n out automatically. This weapon is a hammer action one. Therefore when the hammer is not cocked still the firing pin seems to be free. Secondly while loading or unloading ammo i can clearly see marks of the pin on ammo. which gives me a strong feeling that this weapon can cause an accident anytime while loading. Moreover it always misfires the third short no matter what ammo you use. LAst but not the least it often jams after firing and opens up after applying a great deal of power. I have also observed that the barrel is very hot in just two or three shots. Please advice what should I do. Should i dispose this weapon or is the problem curable?????

Seems that you are missing a firing ping spring. Any gunsmith worthy of the name should be able to fix that. And fixed it should be, as it may fire upon closing if the pin is jammed in a protruded position, which can happen readily with dry firing. As to the barrels getting hot after firing, what do you expect?, that they stay cool?

Yep, just like TwoRivers said. its a firing pin spring thats either broken or fallen off - easy fix for a gunsmith.
Barrels will get hot - as long as the barrels have not been tampered with that is no cause to worry.

Thankx people that really helps. But i was told by the gunsmith that this particular weapon does not have a spring as they were made that way. Is he giving me a fast one or is it true?

Helpful fellow.I am sure he would be willing to exchange it for and Indian made double.

Why don't you post some photos of the action? As others have said, the spring needs to be replaced.

If its a Stevens 940 / 947 / 9478 series it'll have a firing pin spring.

If its a 95 /96 / 101.100 series no spring

No spring too if its a Model 94 and 97 series.

Lack of pictures or markings don't help...what kind of lever/latch does it have for unlocking the barrel/breech?

regards,
cc

so me dbbl 12 bore guns have the kamaani system idont know if some one could translate that for me.the gun gets almost into a cock position when you open and close after loading maybe that sytem is down and the pin is let loose.it can be checked does it still fire in that position or not. you can always have another gunsmith check it;maybe it requires some new or hand made part.after all gun smiths are mostly equipped with the knowledge to deal with a12 bore.if still it is stuck there always someone good in ndelhi....hornet
