After seeing all the shitty gun cases for sale at fancy prices,I thought I should point out the good quality ones.

I would also like to point out that the gun cases that you get, are meant for transportation and not for long term storage.Guns have been ruined by being stored in gun cases for long periods of time.

BTW OT but never leave cartridges in leather gun belts/wallets either unless the cases are nickle plated.

I just got a few hard and soft gun cases from Cabelas. Quick service and very good prices, much less than buying locally!

I am personally using Pelican cases, Model - 1510, for inside padding u can use pick & pluck foam, very good.....can accomodate, 3-4 pistols.....easily...and some ammo + cleaning kit, and spares.....

What then would be ideal way to store guns ? In my case these would be airguns.

Really long term storage.

Heat a drum of grease till it melts.Dip the entire gun in it .Take it out.Allow the grease to solidify.Pack it in a plastic bag.Shall be good to go 100 years from now.

For normal storage.

Clean the barrel thoroughly.Oil the barrel,light coat of vaseline on the metal bits with special attention to metal under the wood.Inspect the gun twice a year,during/after monsoons and six months later.

Store the gun in a rack.I have never had guns rust when stored in the open.In the closet with clothes to attract moisture,all bets are off

Winnie: Cosmoline would be the best.
For stroage, I use a safe, and control humidity within the safe via the use of Sillica Gel packets.
I also store a gun under the bed, one in a bedside table, and one in a case. No issues what so ever.

wtp is right no rust in the open but if kept in a dingy almirah or soft case without silica then rustville.

The best way to store a gun to avoiding pitting from humidity during the monsoon is by putting it in a gun cupboard or a basic cupboard( vertically without covers or sleeves) with a 100 watt bulb lit 24x7. The heat of the bulb will kill all the moisture. The guns should be well lubricated or oiled. And a small pack of silica.

I have used the bulb-in-the-cupboard trick a lot. It is commonly used in the konkan belt and ghats during the heavy monsoons and extremely high moisture. Learnt it there.

Muzzle down is a good way of storing. Saw an army and navy gun. beautiful game gun but its grip had been weakened because of decades of excess oiling and the oil dripping into the woodwork. If it were stored muzzle down, the stock would still be intact. (this explanation was given by the gunsmith).

I keep my guns broken in the gun safe. No problems ever. Left my rifle magazine it in the gunslip outer pocket for a month (i had forgotten to take it out), lo, rusted.
The safe and the slip were 12 inches away and in the same conditions (location, humidity etc)

Another method that people use is to store the gun in a gun safe or dry area after is is encased in a Silicon impregnated gun sleeve.

I keep a thin film of CLP on my long guns and store them vertically in the back of my closet. Never had any issues with rust. Air must be allowed to circulate around the guns. A couple of my rifles were bought in 1986 and they still look as good as they day they were bought. I only use CLP on my guns. After a hunt or a range session, I usually clean them right away. Of course the stocks are a bit dinged up from being out in the woods.

My handguns get handled at least weekly and they also get wiped down with CLP before they are put in a pistol safe. Before carrying a handgun, I wipe the exterior down with a dry cloth.
Of course, I use a copper solvent and bronze brush on the bores after shooting. Hoppe's #9 as a Powder solvent, it the crud is excessive. Grease on the rails, sears and recoil spring and CLP everywhere else. The SIG's are run a lot wetter than any of my other handguns.
