Is reloading ammunition permitted in India? Just curious, as this could aleviate some of the ammo shortages you have there. That is if it is legal, and you can get components there.

Reloading for personal use is permitted so long as the total ammunition quota per year for that person is not exceeded. That is if you are allowed say a 100 rounds of .32 ACP ammo in a year, you may possess enough powder to reload said allowance but must not exceed the total. As you can tell this is difficult to keep track of and also varies with the allowance of ammo quota. It as altogether another matter that neither smokeless powder nor primers are available for purchase in India, nor can they be imported. So basically we have contradictory laws, black powder is available and if you are lucky enough to have a bullet mould then reloading revolvers is not that big an issue if you can find decent primers.

curious, and how exactly do they figure out how much ammunition to allow you?

There is no prescribed limit by the law, but on my license it is 50 cartridges at one time & 100 a year(50/100) for my revolver & rifle, 50 at one time & 200 a year (50/200) for my pistol. I have heard of people who have licenses which have 5000 at one time and unlimited per year, and also 4 cartridges at a time and 10 a year(4/10). Usually competition shooters tend to get the highest quotas and members of rifle associations can get an easier increase in quotas. It is at the discretion of the Licensing Authority and varies with State, City & District. Usually they follow precedent, but, in my opinion, the logic that prevails is if a firearm is procured on a license for self defense, then the quota is minimal. Licenses can be applied for the purposes of Target Practice/Protection/Display etc.

There is no real way of tracking how much ammo you load.
In India, I guess the lack of components and equipment is a damper.
