Start off with the bases and the rings, make doubly sure that they are are correctly suited for the Remington 700, I know of someone who tried fitting scope bases intended for a Winchester post-64 Mod 70 on his Remington 700 BDL '06 and subsequently buggered up a perfectly good Bausch & Laumb scope

Budget being no hindrance, there are several makes such as Schmidt & Bender, Swarovski, Zeiss, Kahles, Leica (I have one in 1.5-6x32! )IOR Valdada, Docter and Meopta which IMO are some of the best European riflescope manufacturers on the planet, then there is Nikon who make some brilliant optics, Burris, also a good bet, Leupold, and many others which I could go on about. Bottomline is that the european stuff is hard to beat in terms of optical clarity, reliability, repeatabitily and overall build quality, downside is that they cost a small fortune, but worth every cent in the end. Have a look at the Zeiss Conquest 3-9x40, these are the scopes Zeiss is churning out for the American market, they're affordable, very well built, precise and offer excellent optical clarity, reliability is synonymous with the Zeiss reputation. Also, look at Nikon, they're one of the best and IMO better than the Leupold's the Nikon Monarch series of riflescopes are the ones to go for.
"With solid bullets on heavy animals such as elephant, rhino and buffalo this power is quite apparent but is not so obvious as when soft-nose bullets are being used, say, lion, particularly when is a case of stopping a charge : the .404 will stop him all right, but will seldom crumple him quite so completely as will the .416" -- John Taylor, Big Game and Big Game Rifles, (Ch. IX)

what are you shooting at? What distance?
I use a Nightforce 12x42 -56 amongst others. I like the NF scopes, because they have excellent clarity, and precise adjustments and a wide variety of reticles.

I know people who use a 15x to shoot at 1000 yards, and other who use 45x to shoot 100 meters.

I would buy the scope with the clearest optics, and highest magnification that you can affoard. There is no best scope power, varies from person to person.

pratap,

Listen to what z375 has to say. Particularly the scope base / rings.

I think a 4-12 optical zoom range should suffice. But its a matter of personal preference.

As an example of overcoming adversity, Karoly Takacs has few peers. He was part of Hungary’s world champion pistol-shooting team in 1938, when an army grenade exploded, crippling his right hand. Ten years later, having taught himself to shoot with his left, he won two gold medals in the rapid-fire class.
