I use the ones in wrist watches- Casio Protrek. Will go for Tissot shortly. These give other info like Temprature, Atm. Pressure, Compass. Protrek gives rate of ascent etc, but the one I had (bought in 1998) lasted about 5 years then went kaput. Hopefully, the new models should be sturdier- there a solar powered one now.

For altimeter, you could find out from Mountaneering institutes- theres one in Manali.

I wear a protrek model prt 40 by casio. I have been using the protrek series for the past 7 years. They are very accurate but they need to be calibrated. It can be easily done, provided you have the information of the current height. If not callibrated they are be used to calculate the height gained in a climb.

The latest are the PRT 1300 series from protrek, and cost about 400$. Quite a few casio dealers(including shoppers stop) stock them. The other brand that has similar model is called sunoto, but i havent come across any dealers for this brand.

I use a Tissot T-Touch which has several functions, one of them being an Altimeter...

Just out of curiosity. Whats the application ? The Casio's and Tissot's are very good, but not suitable for climbing, mountaneering, skydiving and parachuting.

Dear Cherian,
I think the best tool for laying the pipes with proper gradients will be a dumpy level.
You can buy one from any servey stores (Rs. 1200 with stand. Student models)
Do not buy the graduated staff, make one. The altimeter may not give you the accuracy in inches/m.m required for pipe line layout grdiant.
Just a thought, for whatever it is worth.

Prabir.

You have your answer, but for those interested in Altimeter equipped watches I have to say that I have been using a Casio Pathfinder since some years and have not had any problems. The Tissot looks better but weather prediction and record of ascents and descents are probably not possible. During my stint in a mountaineering institute and later amongst skiing friends I found nobody complaining about the Casios.

How is it generally- relaiblity etc (the warranty is only for 1 year). what are the other functions? In Casio, the Altimeter works using air pressure, so is not very accurate. Would be grateful to learn more through your experiance before making a hefty investment!

Cherian: It appears that your requirement is not for an absolute altitude reading but for relative heights and slope measurements. I'd recommend a Survey of India topographical sheet of the area and a Brunton Compass. That should do it.
