38spl & 357mag

hi everybody i wish to bring a handgun into india in future(from canada).hows the availability of 38spl and 357mag ammo.is it very expensive.i cant bring 32s&w,32acp,25acp as they are PB in canada.funny.....

38 is a prohibited bore, so its government guest time if you get one in. 357 is allowed but cartridges are a zillion dollars a piece. 32 acp or 32 S&W long are available. .22 is still the cheapest to shoot. Maybe a .22 bolt action rifle instead eh?

thanks dev.i would surely consider your suggestion if its so difficult to get powerful handgun ammo.as i have said earlier,above calibers are PB in canada.really funny allowing handguns in 460mag and 44mag etc and banning 32acp and 25acp etc..........

Ah its a strange world we live in. I suspect the ban may be because these two can be carried more easily concealed as Sat night specials.

The only .38 revolver calibre listed as PB is the .38 S&W/ .38-200... the .38 special is NOT a PB calibre...

Dev is quite right about the ammo being hard to source & expensive though... but considering the ammo limits on a typical Indian license...

You can bring one fire arm back if you are returning on TR,goes with out saying that you will have to get a Lic

for it,before it is released by the customs.

If you are planning on bringing one just for the duration of stay,then I dont think it will leave the airport.

thanks mundaire and sanjay....i will be bringing the gun permenantly.i think it will better to bring a .22 revolver.i already have a S&W model 48 which is a .22mag with an extra .22LR cylinder but dont know how the ind authorities will react

Personally a .357 would have been my choice... preferably a medium sized Colt or Ruger model... the additional expense for the ammo would be well worth the extra stopping power that this cartridge affords... Besides, unless you are planning to shoot it extensively (unlikely) - you'll probably end up shooting not more than 50 rounds per year through this... so the extra expense really won't amount to much!

I would second the .357. A nice revolver in that calibre is the ideal self-protection gun one could have in India.

This can be easily contested - because .357 mag is CLEARLY NPB as per law! Whosoever is entering .357 mag as PB is ignorant of the law... AND YES! If a gun is intended for self defence it is IS meant to STOP someone (the bad guys)!! Period...!!!

.357 mag would be entered as .357 - My cousin had a S&W large frame revolver in this calibre (Delhi license) ... he in circa '96 would end up paying 100 or so per round of imported ammo...

Yep, it sure is! Just make sure you have the gun on your Canadian license/ permit/ whatever for a period of at least one year prior to your return to India.

Also, I forgot to add - since guns brought back on TR cannot be resold/ transferred/ gifted for the duration of the natural life of the importer - DO NOT spend time thinking of the resale value of different calibres/ models in India... just go ahead a get something that would be suitable for YOUR own purposes (for owning a firearm)... whether that be a shotty/ rifle/ handgun... whether it be for plinking/ shooting competitions/ self-defence etc.

My advice (in my previous posts above), was based on the assumption that the gun would be for self-defence/ occasional carry... I just realised that I was simply presuming too much...
