It is .30 inch caliber boat tail bullet and it was configured ( cartridge case) in the year 1906 so it is called 30 - 1906 or 30 -06. Another .30 inch is 30-30. please do not confuse these .30 s'

Here more info about your question.

First it's .30cal bullet mean diameter of the bullet is .308(7.8mm) you can shoot the same bullet in .308,.300Win Mag,.30-30, and on and on.it's 7.62x63mm Caliber.

You have lot's choices in this caliber on bullets as well , you can find from 100gr to 220gr.bullet.Each bullet have there own Ballistic performance in this caliber.

Here is some info about Muzzle velocity and energy of 30-06 ammunation.

Like if you like shoot 150gn.Nosler Ballistic Tip bullet then muzzle velocity around 2,900 ft/s (890 m/s) and muzzle energy of 2,820 ft·lbf.
Now if you like to shoot same bullet in 220gn. then muzzle velocity around 2,500 ft/s (760 m/s) and muzzle energy of 2,981 ft-lbf.

Here is a picture of Cartridge dimensions for you.I hope it's help you lot.

Veeveeaar is mostly correct. The -06 in the .30-06 comes from the year (1906) that it was adopted and standardized by the US army. It was the standard US Army cartridge till the 1960's and was even in use in the early 1970's. It was replaced by the 7.62 x 51mm NATO and the 5.56 x 45mm NATO which are both still currently in service
The proper nomenclature for the cartridge is the .30-06 Springfield cartridge
The Metric notation that the OP requested would be 7.62 x 63 mm

The fact that some of the bullets loaded in the .30-06 are boat tailed is not a distinguishing feature, and is immaterial.
