There has been a discussion on the various knives that we possess, yet many of us are unaware of the various TYPES of knives and various types of BLADES that are being made. A few types that I can recollect are mentioned below.

I wish to stand corrected in case I've got something wrong and I do request members to add to the list with pictures of their knives / blades.

What is a knife ?
As per the dictionary the word 'KNIFE' is defined as : A cutting instrument consisting of a sharp blade attached to a handle.

Dear IFGians,
Please help me out on this one. I am sure some one amongst you all avid knife collectors, must have some clue on the one I am about to describe. I often saw a type of folding knive in 60's that had the blade sticking out of the back good 3" or less (depending on the size of the knife)from the handle in closed position. One could do small cutting chores without opening the blade to it's full length and they came with the leather sheath aptly designed for it. I have not been able to trace this knife on the net as I do not know what they are known as.. I am desperate to add one of these to my collection. Any help on this subject by IFGians will be highly appreciated.

Corrections-
Skinning Knife -actually a boning/filleting knife.Skinning knife would have a broader belly
Warthog-example of clip point.Warthog is a ? brand name
Marksman, those folding knives with the blade about 3 inches LONGER than the handle is easily remembered.Lots of our seniors in school used to get it back after field trips to Kodaikanal or Ooty
There used to be a Sardar selling knives, Kadas, knuckle dusters,exchanging cut currency notes etc near the footbridge of majestic/Sapna theatre in bangalore.he used to have all these knives.I think they were made in kerala.Good stuff to have in the scouts, blades broke, but the sheaths were a piece of art.Very finely fitted and stitched.

You got the idea eljefe, but the ones I saw were made in Sheffield or may have been German made. They were of very high quality and retained their sharpness amazingly. I saw it in a collection of some royalty and they said it came in pretty useful when they shot real big animal, the size of a Bison or similar kind. Maybe the ones you described were Indian copies. Anyways, was there any specific name for this type?? You are absolutely right about the sheaths though.

As I understand it, Warthog is the peculiar shape of the blade and in my example, the knife is called Ka-Bar Warthog with a drop point blade... I could be wrong though...

The Skinning knife in the example is the Gerber Gator Fillet.... now I don't know the difference between a fillet knife and a skinning knife.... !

Good of you to attempt this Olly but there are a lot of errors. Eljefe pointed some out.

The classification you have done sometimes considers the shape of the blade and at others time the function and sometimes the material used.It is a bit of a muddle.
The marlinspike is not a blade type but the spike shaped tool attached which is used while tying nknots with ropes.The Blade in that particular knife is a hawks bill shaped blade.
As Eljefe pointed out a skinning knife usually has a large belly and very often a gut hook to deal with the entrails.
A filleting knife is usually used to slice fillets from fish and debone it.The blade is flat narrow, flexible and tapering to a point.

The knife you describe is a folding pig-sticking knife. If you would like a modern example, consider the Muela PL-18R.

Haven't seen an English example but older German examples still crop up on the net once in a while.
