Within that budget, you also could buy from BaseCamp / Victorinox stores, the Muela (Spanish) military knife. It is a good solid knife...

Bumping this thread.
I bought a Muela survival knife from the Victorinox dealer on Cambridge Road Ulsoor a while ago, but it does not inspire absolute trust.
Looking to buy a good knife online. Have shortlisted the following :
1. Gerber 22-01400 LMF II
2. Schrade Extreme SCHF3 Survival Fixed Blade
3. Elite Forces Survival Bowie Knife
4. SOG Specialty Knives & Tools E37T-K Seal Pup Elite Knife with Kydex Sheath,

Which one would you recommend? I've zoned in on the Gerber coyote and the SOG seal pup.

I've based my choices mostly on blade length and reputation, but would like to hear from a regular user.

The Muela knives mostly available now at the Victorinox dealers are junk, you will be better off buying a swiss knife from them.You can get the Gerber LMF II at Adventure 18 stores (in Delhi at Satya Niketan) and their mail address is [email protected] (yes adventurers), the last tiem they had told me that they can send it by mail too. See www.adventure18.com OR directly import it.

Out of the ones you have listed I personally like the shape and design of the Seal Pup but much depends on what you require from the knife. The other option is the LMF II but this is just my opinion.

in survival situation knife can be your only tool, if reliability would be main criteria, then LMF 2 goes first from this list.

another option can be, a bit more costly - any bayonet made by Eickhorn

I have used a SOG seal pup quite a bit and I like it. I have a school where we teach outdoor skills and use a lot of different knives. A person came with the gerber LMF but I did not like it that much as the blade tip profile is too thick and rounded for my taste (for instance, you cannot use it to spear food to eat as the food falls off the tip easily. Silly but important reason to me!).

My other strong suggestion is to make darn sure whatever you get, do not get one with a serrated blade. They are difficult to keep sharp and are a bother to give cosmetically clean cuts on anything except for rope.

I have no experience with the other 2 you mention but personally of those I'd get the seal pup and be happy.

Former military man, Jeff Freeman led the charge to engineer this fearless new 10" survival knife, that’s field-tested with the troops. The Gerber LMF II is as adaptable as the personnel who carry it.

The over-molded handle successfully limits blistering. There is complete separation between the tang and butt cap, so the knife absorbs the shocks from hammering and prevents the shocks of electricity. Smartly situated grooves and lashing holes let the LMF II convert to a spear. The low-profile sheath facilitates movement, limits noise, works for parachuting, and attaches to a belt or Molle vest. The patented, integrated sharpener means edge retention in the field.

The holes in the grip can be used to tie it to a thick stick to make a spearhead if needed. The bottom handle has a sharp pointed edge at the bottom that’s designed to break glass, this knife was made as a 'pilots' knife in case they needed to exit their aircraft and survive. To be able to cut thin metal and break glass among other things, and it does this flawlessly. The flat part of the handle can also be used as a hammer, the shock does not go to the rest of the blade as the bottom handle is separated from the rest of the blade by a cushion, this would also help you if say you accidentally cut an electrical wire or needed to, between the rubber grip and the bottom handle being separated, you'd have to touch the blade itself to get shocked. In order to sharpen it you have to de-attach the two Velcro straps to the hard plastic part of the sheath and move away the straps in order to properly sharpen it. If the need arises for the sharpening the serrated portion of the blade, you’ll need to get a serrated blade sharpener.

There is nothing worse than ordering a knife and then having to go through the hassle of returning it because it was the wrong one. I own a Gerber LMF II, you won’t regret buying one.

as I heard 20north do not ship knives to India anymore, you can place order and pay, and later they will do refund. ask Bruno22 and he will procure any knife of legal size.

Thanks for the thumbs up. Will contact Bruno and work out my order. However I had spoken with a chap at 20 north and they saido that they will deliver knives that ch are within the legal limit. Perhaps I should test them with an inexpensive knife at first.
