Is it ankus or ankush?
How abundant are these goads in India, and can they be exported? In any event, does anyone have a photo of the styles made and used from 1800 to the 1930's?

Funny the origin or words. An elephant goad is called Ankush in Hindi/Sanskrit. The English (perhaps at the time of the Raj) took up this word in their Dictionary as Ankus.

Then it is ankush. How rare or unusual are these items and are they exportable? I am not looking for new or made for tourist stuff. I would also like to see good photos if any members care to share. One with koftgari would be nice to see.
One of the auction houses here in the US did find one for me with an ivory shaft here is a photo:
Lovely pic. Please resize it to 640x480.

it is ankus unless u follow the ISKCON ruees of spelling
In sanskrit it litrally means " to control" eg: put an ankush on ur desires.
they are still abundant in india. and since its not a weapon, the only thing to hinder the export would be the antiques act.
i recently saw probably the most ornate ankush in london. plz refer to another post "visual treat for sword lovers"
if u need more info, contact me
