hey guys,

i read somewhere that bow strings should be coated with a layer of wax (once a year)....

i 'acquired' a piece of wax from a dealer ( had to convince him that i need a sample ....and will order in bulk in the future ...lol...) .... i wanted to know, if there is a specific manner in which the wax is to be applierd( direction, quantity etc)....if anyone has tried this then pls do lemme know the procedure....

i use wax on my bows, you just apply it on the strings after few shots, not once per year. also apply when finished for the day or if leaving for long time. i am not aware of any special way to apply it, just rub it in gently, not to little or over the top. i use plain bee wax , do not forget that strigs tend to fry so also check for frays and replace the strig. i was adviced by dealers to change strig after two years or so, if used lightly.

thanx for the info....i own a compound bow (fred bears)...and a bamboo bow (made in bhutan, i made the bow string myself)..... i 'assembled' the string using squash guts..... so do u think that also would need to be waxed..... or any other way that i would 'maintain' the string..... its a real pain assembling a bow string.... would like to extend its life ......

i have owned the compund for abt 5 years now...havent yet changed the string.... hope that i dont have to change it soon....it takes 3 people to string my bow..... so would like to take care of it....

bamboo bow, not used one , well my 7 year old son makes and uses. Bow strigs if under pressure are very dangrous. So take care, i cut my hand when restringing.

What is squash guts???

when stringing compound bow its best and safest to have a bow press. As u are dealing with lots of tension. two types are on market, portable one and workshop type.

if the string looks in good shape then do not change strings however please do check after few shots for fraying etc .

with compond bow its best to use factory strings, rather then make ur own, unless u have the expreince and have some idea as to how to do it.

i will not be able to be much help after this post as due to go out of sta, for week or so.

what ever u do when stringing compond bow were gloves and glasses or might lose some skin or eye.

Squash guts are the strings on a squash guts, they have gr8 tensile strength thats why i zeroed down on squash guts...(i had tried tennis and badminton guts earlier).....

For the compound, yes i use only strings manufactured by fred bears....will never try to make one myself...... (dont want to even imagine a string givin way wen pulled at 40pounds).... not sure whether i want to invest in a bow press.... but will check never the less..... i have had my share of cuts due to bow strings.... i have learnt the hard way...

ok so its for the bamboo bow string and its nylon/plastic strings. as used on rackets etc. so no need to apply wax. just check with people who play tennis etc what they do to maintain thier ractkes etc.

why not try this link for archery items. its in uk very helpful. got my hoyt from them and other kit. not sure if they do oversea postage. they have full range of archary kit. price i found were reasonable.
