An Unexpected Welcome Gift!!!!

Here I was at the breakfast table savoring a scrambled egg when a cousin from Kerala walks in and hands me a newspaper wrapped parcel....
Said it was a "Gift" from my uncle, who had seen my small collection of blades when he was in Mumbai a couple of months ago.....
On opening it ...my jaw dropped & I let out a whoop!!!!
Image
I called him immediately to thank him profusely for his generosity...
He said he had got it made by a local Iron Smith!
Apart from the beautiful shape & contours what caught my fancy was the wooden handle which was so immaculately carved to resemble a 'stag horn' :D
Initially there was a temptation to grind the blade to a mirror finish, but then Moin, SD & Kshitij were of the unanimous opinion that it be left as is - as it added an element of character to it...
So be it!!!

Beautiful! Hard core Kerala :D
Yes. The finish is a charm. Just ensure you wipe it down with an anti rust product.... Oh yes... and try your hands on some tender coconuts :D

Hi BD,
You're absolutely right - It was made in Wynad :D
Will try on Tender Coconut - but slices sugarcane like a blade through butter :D

That seems to be an old kurpi which is it called, used for the purpose of cutting crops. You can used some lubricant to remove the rust from this unique piece.

Hey! That's not 'Rust' you see on the blade....
Those marks are the 'Hammer Forging Marks' - They are not to be removed - In fact they add a bit of uniqueness & character to the blade :D

I think it is used to cut Bamboo not crops.

Brihaji could you tell me how to remove the outer cap on a ballistol rebluing liquid bottle. There are two caps and the inner cap has a dropper attachment but I could not get the outer cap off the inner cap.
Regards,
GNV

This is not to cut crops, for cutting crops a tool named Datti( In punjabi ) is used while the one here is named Datt which is used to chop sugarcane, tree branches, bamboo etc.
I have 4-5 of these lying at our farm.

Hi, This is the all purpose Vettu Kathi/Kathi Aal used in Kerala. It is used as a machete, chopping tree branches, clearing bush and not to mention removing coconut husk, splitting coconut and tender coconut.

Great acquisition Briha sir.

Very nice piece brihacharan-Ji, sheer nostalgia for me! :D (y)

Nicely crafted handle - I especially like the slip-stop shape at the end of the grip.

Wow! gorgeous in its simplicity and functional acumen. Would indeed be a shame to change/alter anything about the blade. A true keeper...congrats...!!

I tried but the outer cap wouldn't come off. I'll force it off and see what is wrong. Thanks
