Hello Friends,

Is this a original winchester knives? Are they worth buying?

How to import them? Please throw some light!

these are Chinese made cheapos ...they have free shipping to USA and not to India ! My request is you investigate the local market , you will get similar ones for 3-500 bucks. Honestly speaking they aren't worth .

Hi Vijay,

Before you go and buy the stuff, zero in on WHY do you want a knife. If it is for normal daily cutting and so on, an ordinary Swiss Army Knife (Victorinox) is excellent for the purpose. If you consider the Vic as having too many attachments for what you need, the Opinel is an excellent choice. I have both (the Opinel a gift from IFGian Tirpassion), and I find myself carrying the Vic by default.

The benefit of both of these is that they look quite unobstrusive. You can of course go to knifecenter dot com and get yourself anything on the menu! But then, the shipping and duties would kill you.

And as Kalashnikovcult says, stay away from the Chinese junk. I did see such stuff in T Nagar market in your city, but that was a long time ago.

Hi ramnikbajwa,

Thanks for the info.. Yes Winchester knifes are cheap and affordable but only drawback is they are "made in china". Many of the forum members are not recommending these Chinese fakes because of their bad quality blades(440c).

As you mentioned Survival knife are best, but overpriced! I am going to search the local market here in Chennai.

Hi essdee1972 ji,

Thanks for your reply.. :D From my childhood i collect knives as a hobby and addicted to it!!! My first collection is from my grandfather, it is a very small folding knife with rusty look . I do have some machetes with me, most of them are local made.

Yes, Swiss army knife are the best to carry with during travel! Opinel is recommended by the IFG forum member nav1558 and it is excellent piece.. i found many victoroinx kinda knife from 90 rs, all are junks!!!

Vijay, try Basecamp stores for Victorinoxes. The problem with Chinese knives is not the grade of steel. 440 C is a decent enough steel, but when made in China, the loose tolerances and bad production standards might mean that you get something which may not be 440C at all! Plus the heat treatment may not be up to the mark. And as you have noticed in the 90 rupee "Swiss" knives, the fit & finish is actually bad.

I have a "Chinese Swiss" knife, in which the main blade is chrome plated mild steel, and the bottle openers, etc. are actually ALUMINIUM!! Cost me 25 bucks 15 years back. I could have set fire to the money and got better returns!!

Why don't you post pics of your collection?

Essdee ji,
