My Review of OutdoorTravelGear.com
Dear IFG Members,
You must be thinking why am I giving my review on a website on IFG and particularly in Archery, Knives & other edged tools section. Well to put it simply, OutdoorTravelGear.com is the legitimate partner of Gerber Legendary Knives in India. Their name is listed as the official Indian Reseller on Gerber's website GerberGear.in . Correct me if I'm wrong but I don't know of any other american knife manufacturer that has come to India officially to sell their products. Quite frankly I was shocked to see a knife manufacturing company in India other than Victorinox. So, the big question is how is their performance and service.
Well a few days back on the ebay global easy buy I was searching for gerber prodigy tanto fixed blade knife. I was frustrated about HDFC Netsafe services down for 5 months straight and that I couldn't buy from any international site. Suddenly this weird idea came in the back of my head that I should do a price comparison between gerber's official site and global easy buy. I then googled the gerber's website and to my astonishment there is a indian site for gerber. I quickly opened the site and went to see the contact information. Again, to my surprise there is an Indian company which is official gerber reseller. I googled the company's name in hope to find an online shop & VOILA! I come upon OutdoorTravelGear.com and find the gerber prodigy tanto too. Also I find all the latest multitools and knives sold by gerber. I knew I had just hit the jackpot! Awesomeness came down from my eyes when I saw the applegate fairbairn combat folding knife is also on their listings. I don't know how to describe the feeling but the closest would be to jumping from sky wearing wingsuit and ending up in the playboy mansion's swimming pool full of naked beauties! "DENE WALA JAB BHI DETA, DETA CHHAPPAR FAAD KEEE...!!!!" the song from hera pheri was literally playing in the background for me because for months I wasn't able to purchase a knife because of the HDFC Netsafe problem & Rupee Devaluation and frustration in my mind had really hit the fan. But God is God, he had to pull me out of my limbo(Inception reference), so he shows me temporarily out of stock sign below the item's pic. But still I was happy knowing I had other items 'in stock' to be purchased.
As Soon As I came down from sky high euphoria, the second thoughts started coming to my minds. Thoughts like what if they are bunch of looters & thugs like shopyourworld.com who never refund the amount you paid for an item 6 months back unless you file a complaint in the consumer court (yeah it happened, to my friend) because the price was really low on the site as compared to ebay GEB. So I pick a cheap cap and put them up to test. Guys and Girls, when I say the thing is good, it literally is everytime I say it. The cap arrived in 3 days of my purchase. By that time I had given them a thumbs up for authenticity but still I lacked faith as to will they be able to deliver fast the next time. So I once again put them up to the ultimate test and ordered gerber BG survival canteen water bottle. And SURPRISE SURPRISE they've once again proved themselves! The item came very fast in 3 days, also in a good packaging all nice and fresh.
I give 10/10 to outdoor travel and gear. KUDOS!
For more information just visit their website or if you want to see the pics of their store go to tripadvisor's site. They've got some nice pics of their store in Mumbai on the website.
JUST GO BUY A KNIFE OR TWO YOU GUYS IT IS WORTH IT.

Re: My Review of OutdoorTravelGear.com
My only gripe is they stock just Gerber, which is the lowest rung of performance (Gerber now routinely gets most stuff manufactured in China, with poor quality control, reflected in the several recalls in the last few years). There are many other good quality brands that deliver decently priced blades, one doesn't have to always stock Benchmade. For eg., SOG, Kershaw.

@choombak
Nope they still make their gears in USA. Just some of the products like BG line of items are made in china. You can get a gerber applegate fairbairn tactical folder that is made in usa, the lmf 2 is made in usa, the dmf, the prodigy, multitools etc are made in usa. Although, SOG is way better than gerber for using AUS-8 steel but they kind of show off more than any brand. If you take for eg sog aegis tanto folder, you can literally see sog sog sog sog sog sog written on it. I love the NW ranger too but it has crappy sheath (i owned one). HOWEVER, I'd loveeee! to see cold steel coming to INDIA. I love recon 1 the most and then the laredo bowie, then spartan folder. THEY ARE JUST AWESOME AT WHAT THEY DO, PERIOD
Only speaking from el cheapo's perspective

Re: My Review of OutdoorTravelGear.com
The Applegate Fairbarn is manufactured from Taiwan to the US, depending on the price and steel. Several multitools are manufactured in China (bar a few high end ones). They still manufacture in the US, however, the percentage has been steadily going down in the last few years. I have nothing against manufacturing in China, but then they compromise on quality as well, to keep the price down. For eg., most China made items cannot use quality steels, and mostly use the 8Cr13MoV, or 420* series. Heck, some of the tools even say "surgical steel". I suspect Gerber gives hefty discounts on bulk orders, which is why a large number of stores carry them - even in the US. And as a direct result, most stores are interested in selling the mall-ninja-uber-cool looking Gerber folder to the unsuspecting dad for gifting his son, while Spyderco, Benchmade, Cold Steel, ZT, ESEE warm the display surrounded by Gerber legendary blades. Haha.seedha.admi wrote:@choombak

Agree as of today the $/Rupee conversion makes it uneconomical to order something from Knifecenter, but you can always look at the sale forums on bladeforums.com, edcforums.com, jungletraining.com (ESEE), calguns.net, thehighroad.org, cpfmarketplace.com (has a knife and multitool section), multitool.org, and use their contacts in the US to have stuff re-routed. I typically do that for most of the folks - have something shipped to me, and then I ship it out to India. Works very nice, and I don't see why I cannot extend the same courtesy to other IFGians.

Re: My Review of OutdoorTravelGear.com
good to see a testimony for outdoor travel gear dot com here.
im a regular patron, they do stock some very usual, but very useful things. Their delivery time beats any other online store in the country as far as my experience goes. . they actually do deliver "yesterday"... its that fast.
about other counterparts, leatherman also has an official Indian online store too... but strangely, ordering from the US still turns out way cheaper, yes, shipping and duty included. go figure.

Re: My Review of OutdoorTravelGear.com
according to their official rep:
also tried to attach the price list which they sent me, but am unfortunately unable to do so since "the board attachment quota has been reached, sorry".
however, emailed you (seedha aadmi) more detail.
would suggest you rather just order from amazon.com as the price works out cheaper even after including shipping & customs.

Re: My Review of OutdoorTravelGear.com
I have seen tools to be charged at full msrp in India, which is about $182 for the Charge. What is missing is the fact that the world is a small place and full msrp is never charged by any dealer. Here is how it will happen for unsuspecting folks out to buy the charge:seedha.admi wrote:leatherman charge is priced at 11,950/- on exadsports.com what do you think?
Calling all IFG MEMBERS
1. The Indian dealer pulls up leatherman site and shows the msrp.
2. Converts to Rs, adds some random figure as duty, shipping (may even tell you the duty is less this time around else it would have cost 15K
3. You feel lucky to grab it at mere 12K and walk out.
4. The dealer is happy to have made hefty profit.
5. Win win perceived, when it is win-lose.
I am sure all dealers are treated fairly by leatherman and our import duties aren't so high..maybe someone with knowledge can chime in.

Re: My Review of OutdoorTravelGear.com
Seedha Aadmi,
I had PM'd you the entire conservation including that in which the Leatherman officials in the US were justifying the ridiculously high Indian rates (as compared to the US rates) of the same products.
Why are you hesitant to order from Amazon with delivery to India?
Make an Amazon.com account (not a .in) and feed in your local Indian address details while creating the account. Find a product that ships to your address and
"add to your cart". Amazon will display the total amount, with a break up of estimated customs duty & delivery, much before finalising the payment process.
The only other option is to request someone to carry it along with them when they return from overseas.
