Dear All,

I was hoping you could direct me to a source in India, who can supply S30V steel sheets or Ingots in India.

Any information will be highly appreciated.

Regards,
Pistolero

Dear Vikram,

Im working with a smith to create replica's of a Pezh Kabz, Jir-ah-Bouk & Katar.

As the blades of most of these weapons were the best faulad of its time, I was hoping to use the best modern day options available.

Pistolero

Hi Adi;

Dont think so. Many online websites where you can order blanks from. The HT for S30V being powder steel is very complicated. Dont think it can be done correctly by our local lohars or Sakligars...

Moin.

Hi Moin,

We do have the Crucible HT Manual for ST30V and we have a temperature controlled gas forge available with good temper tank. The rest is trial and error :D

That is the beauty of experimenting, if you dont try and fail, there is nothing learnt :)

The smith is obviously doing this for the first time and I have few days to kill in July, so preparing for the same :), the only problem now is sourcing the blanks. Hopefully this too will be resolved soon.

Pistolero

Don't think any of the big guys will sell in quantities less than a few tonnes. Plus that would require a lot of hassles, legal & commercial. Your best bet would be to try the yellow pages (e.g. justdial.com) and call up the wholesale / retail suppliers. Of course, on this route, you might be handed a lemon, some other grade rather than the one which you asked for.

One possibility is to pick it up from the US, from a few knife makers who may be willing to sell. Additionally, S30V may not be the best as of today - there are possibly better steels depending on the type of qualities required. For eg., S35VN is now being used by Chris Reeve, while many opt for exotic Bohler M390, CPM 3V (this may be the best for you), ELMAX, CTS-XHP, and so on.

HT is going to be a b**** for most of these, but you can contact a few knife makers who may be willing to share this info with you. Alternately, ht it here in the US and take the blank with you - there are a few good ht shops around (Paul bos, peters). These are good guys and may work with you when you state the intended purpose.

On a side note, wouldn't 1095 properly ht be a better and natural option for the blades?
