Katar dagger

Post by Karanchuhg » Sun Mar 24, 2013 2:01 pm

Hello - I have had this as a child, it was gifted to me by my uncle and belonged to some maharaja (at least that what I was told!)

Any idea on approximate cost to sell this item? Can I get it valued to determine how old this exactly is?

Karan,
I think this is a good blade. Wait for Moin, Katana and other blade experts to comment.
I have a katar too but bought it from an antique dealer in Jodhpur who vouched on its antiquity and claimed that it belonged to a king
I am no expert on Indian blades but your knife definitely does not look ordinary. Hope I am not wrong.

Cheers

A very interesting Kataar Karan. If not much trouble can you please post a close up of the steel. If it belonged to royalty it would have some amount of embellishment/ornamentation atleast on the hilt. Even if it was a battle blade. Why do you want to sell this ?

I don't think it has ornaments or space for it...it does have a very peculiar hole on the blade, bottom corner of the blade , any idea what it could be for, utility or to hang something?

I don't want to sell it per say, but will consider if its a good price :)

What would be a 'good' price ? I could be a customer...

As moin said if it were from royalties it would definitely have a family symbol or a symbol of their flag. As a rajput I can vouch for it. Also if you look at the ones displayed in the museums then you'll find the katar of king to have a great deal of "Kalaakari" on it. Of course they used those too but the one which they carried to the wars were different. Not many people know this but the ones they used to carry were passed to the next generations and not put in museums. Also if the katar is without the things things mentioned then that doesn't mean it Isn't a real katar. The king bearing it might be a small king under a large empire or it could've been a commander's or a soldiers katar. It doesn't matter though the katar which has seen battlefield is as authentic as it can be.

Also I want to state that katar was, is and will be the no. 1 knife in all of mankind to carry it in a war.
