What do you plan to do with it?
Do you live in a rural or an urban setting?
What are your hobbies (that might dictate what this knife is used for; camping, woodwork, etc)?
What daily chores would it be used for?

There are so many different types of knives available that it would be hard to even suggest something without knowing how you might want to use it.

Try victorinox swiss army knives they come in various shapes and sizes also you can go to oliveplanet.in where you may find what your heart desires.

I was going to say that a survival knife needs a corkscrew and bottle opener!

Be careful you do not end up like W.C. Fields:

Reminds me of my safari in Africa. Somebody forgot the corkscrew and for several days we had to live on nothing but food and water.

I personally think that if the chief scout of the world uses it then it may be worth a shot.

Sorry I forgot to mention some crucial things. The survival knife should have paracord strings, compass, fire starter, knife sharpener, long blade is preferred for survival knife but pocket knife is good too) and a blade made from really good metal.

No, he merely endorses it. Just a marketing gimmick. For their price, I'd rate them junk. There have been several recalls as well due to poor construction quality.

Gerber makes many good knives and tools. But the Bear Grylls series, I dont like at all. Its a personal thing and you may love it. I have used one and its plasticy, prone to the plastic rubbing off the handle. Just didnt like it. If you really want a good Gerber survival blade get the LMF 2.

Go to J Biswas and Co at Esplanade crossing on any weekday and go through their collection of Victorinox and Buck knives.... Prices starts from Rs 700 or so and goes up ... D N Biswas and Co at Dalhousie stock Muela knives and axes. Both are gun shops. Since your question is Kolkata specific these are the best places to look. Next comes the new store for outdoor gear (forgetting the name) at Bishop's House next to 50 Chowringhee Road near Birla Planetarium. They keep the Gerber survival series knives. Don't go to Fancy Market at Kidderpore. You only get Chinese junk there.

well you can order ZT knives from knifecenter.com if general purpose and for hardcore survival in combat or as such then gerber rex applegate(something like that) folder.If by any chance you wanna play Rambo-Rambo in the jungle then maybe check out the aitor knives at gsmith and co. website or contact them.

Here is another suggestion-

Purchase a Victorinox "Tinker":


Or a Victorinox Spartan:


And start carrying it around in your pocket and using it. In a year, decide what you like about it and what you do not like about it, and then buy something else.

Before you know it, you have a whole drawer full of knives, LOL!

The Victorinox "Rucksack" and "Outrider" are also nice, but they are bigger and the bigger the knife the less likely it is for you to have it on your person when you need it.

@ Seedha.admi, I assume you are referring to the knives with hollow handles to hold all the stuff. In general, hollow-handles are not recommended for heavy-use knives. However, for urban scenario, you can get a folder. You can carry the rest of the stuff in your school / college / laptop bag / briefcase / etc.

@ Amarjit, the references given by the members above are solid. However, if you are looking for a fixed blade survival knife, take the overnighter to Siliguri, hop over to Darjeeling, search for & get a solid Khukri. If you trek, or know friends who do (many Kolkatans trek), it will be easier to get a proper gaon wallah Khukri via the guides & porters in WB hills. Although, carrying a fixed blade in a crowded place like Kolkata is a bit dicey!

As you are new to knives (my assumption entirely, forgive me if I am wrong), Mark's advice is solid! Carry one & see how you feel. Don't forget the corkscrew and bottle opener, though!

@ Moin, the cost of the Bayley is like space-high! Otherwise, a seven-year wait might have been worth it!
