Knife sharpening contest-How good are you?

Post by Skyman » Mon Nov 26, 2012 6:59 pm

There are a lot of knife enthusiasts on this forum, and a great many blades are owned between us.However, how good are you at sharpening your toys? Therefore, i'm holding a bit of a contest. If you can, using just your knife, carve out a circle from ordinary A4 printer paper, you pass. You hold the knife in one hand, paper in the other, cut a bit straight and then curve it until you eke out a circle.

If your knife is not sharp enough, it will get stuck or drag to the side.As you can see, i have made a semi-circle with mine from my notebook paper. How good are you? A4 printer paper is thicker and should increase your chances.Dare to show?

Winner gets nothing, for i have nothing to give.Consider it a rite of passage - If you can cut a circle, you are worth your salt.Free hand preferred. If not, guided. No cheating!!

There you go my friend. The Izula was convexed freehand using sandpaper mousepad method and teh knife was not touched up since the last two weeks. Has seen a lot of cutiing, so not exactly razor sharp, but could manage to cut as required.

Will try this again after touching up the edge and stropping it.

And since Mack's the undisputed king in free hand sharpening, let's see him push cut soft tissue paper instead of printer paper with one of his stropped barkies. Mack up for Skyman's challenge :) :)

As you can see, knives not sharp enough will not form a proper full circle, but cut unevenly. You have cut out a nice chapatti there! Also i'm surprised you are the only one who stepped up.I applaud your effort.Do post your next effort.

One honest confession.... I have never sharpened a knife in my life

Will try to cut out a circle with my EDC victorinox... its still retains whatever sharpness it came with

TC sahab, do post your efforts.I for one would not trust my knife if it couldn't cut a circle without snagging.
