Okay, I apologise for getting those pulse rates up.

Mines merely a clone made by Bark River Knives. The Barkie has a convex grind instead of Bob's hollow grind. No tapered tang either and the sheath is anything but a Loveless.

There are production blades and then there is ART!

Wonderful blade with nice clean lines!

Looks like a comfortable handle with an ideal blade length.

Slingshot: Nothing very arty about this one. Whilst this knife is definitely going to be used, I am not happy to see tool marks. Especially at this price point.

Rajat: What I liked about this knife is that it has the blade length of the ESEE-3 (including choil) and the handle length of a 4 with custom scales.


It is comfortable in the hand but not superlatively so. I am refering to Dr. Wako's videos where he gushes over the handle. However, in all fairness to him, my hands are larger. Mike Stewart says that the drawing for this knife was given to him by Loveless but I feel the heel has been turned in a little more than it should have been.

Forgot to add, that I actually prefer the convex grind. If it was hollow ground, I probably wouldn't have bought it.

Added a few more pics to the first post after dressing the sheath with Montana Pitch Blend.

I may be able to get a DPH with green canvas micarta and red liners, in which case I will probably sack this one.

Yes, the pictures comparing it to the esee's clearly show the overall proportions and the degree to which the heel has been turned in.

Overall a good size. A blade longer than the esee 3 is not really needed and is not convenient for most applications.

The tooling marks are something which we have to accept on the Fallknivens and some of the Bark River knives.

I had read a statement from BRKT earlier when they had started using the CPM 3V steel that although they try to minimize the marks, the steel is very tough and in order to keep the costs down they do not completely finish the blades and leave the knives with some marks visible and that this does not affect the strength or performance of the blades in any way.

I guess this is not limited to the 3V anymore.

It was a long time back that I had read this somewhere. But the point that they are probably missing is that these are not cheap knives anyway. If we look at the production knives segment these are towards the higher end.

Maybe it adds to the family owned small business and non-mass produced, produced with love effect.

But anyway I really like some of the Bark River Knives.

BTW, I decided against the esee 4 (at least for now and thanks to your helpful comparison) and instead got another esee which I really like and even more after I got it.

I was comparing it to pictures of a couple of original DPHs and now feel Mike Stewart has made a faithful copy. However, I will compare it to a real one when I get the opportunity.

Your recollection regarding the lack of factory finish on the 3V knives is correct. However, I was refering to irregular tooling marks and very light scratches on the blade and just behind the
guard. It's nothing that a stropping or 'Flitzing' wont cure but not what you'd expect from a company that does semi-custom work. I am still getting a few more though.

There is something about it that is very appealing to the eye, (my eye, at least)

XL you are not alone. The Loveless DPH has been my idea of the quintessential 'hunter' since my teens. I did not know about Loveless back then but whenever I saw pictures of such a knife, it spoke to me.

The way Loveless ground his blade and the addition of the tapered tang made his version look better than Bark Rivers. However, I am glad Bark River did not copy the hollow grind even though it makes the blade look a bit 'blocky'.

A friend of mine has a very faithful copy made by Seizo Imai and that looks so much more elegant. He does not live in Bangalore but when I get the opportunity I will compare the two side by side and take some pictures.
