Please put in your suggestions and provide vital legal information.
I am caught in a problem ,I had a knife imported from China with non sharpened blade with a length of more than 9 Inches ,which University security caught during a check in my hostel room.I had posted the intent of importing such knives on IFG before Buying these which I can corroborate with atleast two more incidences where I have stated the purpose to be ceremonial .I was possessing this for over a month since it arrived. The reason for possessing for such knive was purely ceremonial and religious-but they are saying that the knife blade was too big to keep which again itself depends upon the understanding of the Islamic Jurisprudence. The Sikhs are allowed to keep daggers though.
Currently my Laptop and cell Phone have been taken away that I dont know why by the concerned authorites of the Indian University I am in.I am depressed and cant focus on studies!
What could be whole understanding of the case by the security(authorities) !
What could be the outcome ?
Why is it that knive laws in India are so hazy!

its good u caught by the uni security and not by the police , they might issue u a show-cause notice or maybe communicate with your parents. render a apology and that u had no criminal intention and from now on there wouldnt be any mistakes further , i haven't come across anything in whatever i know about Islam in which knives are suppose to be worn for any ceremonial purpose, except that knives are used during maatam in moharram julus.

Taha, sad to hear the knife you got with so much trouble and anticipation has been confiscated by your college authorities. Havings said that, I do not see any logical reason or religious for you to keep such a blade in a university hostel. You are lucky that the knife has only been confiscated by college security and not the police. I hope you get out of the trouble you are in and end up wiser.
Best Regards
Moin.

It is sunnah (supplimentary) to have a sword in Islam for sure .But it is not obligatory, neither can someone stop anyone from practising this sunnah, just to explain further it is obligatory to to pray 5 times a day for men and women, but it is sunnah to cover the head for men and obligatory for women.

bro the thing is this maybe explained to the authorities in countries where there is Islamic rule but in democratic countries we follow the rules of the nation we reside in. so just be ready with the apologies and forget the issue.

Without trying to hurt anyone's feelings, the law of the land as it stands is so:-
a) NO ARMS (firearms or arms other than firearms, see Arms Act for definitions) are allowed on an educational campus in the whole of the Union of India
b) Even if you posses a licensed Arm and it has to be brought on campus (for target practice/ other legitimate purpose) prior sanction from campus authorities is required. I know, I was on the college shooting team! No exceptions to this rule.
I'd say your college authorities are quite lenient having simply confiscated the knife, as per law they could very well have made out a criminal case against you and possibly ruined your career. For now apologise and try to get over the incident, for future join NAGRI and try to change the law!
Cheers!

Taha,
Islam does'nt say, that you can keep a knife more than 9 inch. you could have kept a
smaller one for religious purpose mate. the situation you are in, do apologise before
you get reported to the cops.

I agree. The same rule applies to all schools, colleges and university all over the US even though its such a pro-gun country. And trust me they are very strict about weapons on campuses. That includes knives as well.
so yeah I would say proactively apologize and have the knife sent back to your residence if possible.
keep us posted.

The best option here is to tender an unconditional apology, citing no malicious intent, move the knife out of your college to your home, and get over it.
Remember, unconditional apology and NO arguments. It is best if you keep religion aside and make no argument of the same. Make no argument for anything since you are on the wrong side. Only your apology and the good faith of your college in you will help.
Keep us posted of the outcome. Learn a lesson and move on.

Hi Taha; I am quoting this from a forum which has some comments inappropriate in general not only to this forum and therefore not posting the link. I spent two years working in Saudi Arabia, the birth place of Islam. Where I worked was an hours drive away from Mecca the holiest moslem site on earth. I never saw anyone an arab or otherwise carry a sword or swords for sale openly in either Jeddah, Riyad or Dammam.

"Allah Tala says numerous time in the quran - follow the book of Allah and the hikmah (wisdom)......The wisdom usually is referring to the sunnah.
Wisdom, just means, acting in the best possible manner in a given situation and circumstances - this is what the sunnah means - The prophet (saw) practiced the book of Allah Tala and acted in the best possible and most appropriate manner in each and every situation.
That is why for each off the prophet (saw) action we should look at the wisdom of his actions...and ask ourselves how would and what way, would have the prophet (saw) acted - in the situation, circumstances and location we find ourselves in the 21st century.
So in this case, would it be sunnah, to carry a sword in one hand and a mobile on the other hand whilst walking down ones street - would this be the action off the prophet (saw)....
Every muslim is an ambassador to the prophet (saw) - one should act with wisdom - which is sunnah....in each and every situation - saying you found a hadith in book XYZ - means nothing, until it is examined and bought to life and used in a manner which befitting to the prophet (saw) - this is true love for the messenger of Allah Tala"

Please do not use Sunnah as an argument nor misconsture the true intent of Sunnah to suit your purpose.
I've read in some other post where you happily carried such a large knife on person to get teh correct tool to get the handle fixed. Please do not repeat this stunt or try and keep such blades on campus. Please listen to what members have to say and exercise caution and common sense.
P.S: What you have is replica of a large knife custom made for a film. This does not qualify for a sword.
Best Regards

I have already apologized to and co-operated with the college authories in a good understanding of xenophobia ,sterotyping and islamophobia and let them check my transactions ,videos(Included aljazeera & jouneyman pictures reports which are alledged to be inflammatory) and personal stuff including family photos.I realise on the basis of the situation they have the right to do so and have have taken my laptop ,cell phone ,and I also was asked to submit few books that I read other than for academic purposes, the books were ,Militancy In Jammu and Kashmir by Luv Puri,India-Russia Partnership on Kashmir & chechnya by Deobidutta ,English Translation of the Quran ,Riyadus Sauliheen(a hadith book) .Even my pendrive which is in a shape of a small dummy grenade.
They later returned me the Quran ,hadith book, and the pendrive ,but kept all other things that I gave them.
I completely agree to their actions since I understand the sitiuation, and I am educated about Islamophobia ,and its range .
I feel I should write an unconditional apology letter claiming it was an honest and innnocent mistake tommorow .
Moreover they have called my parents all the way to my university who will have to meet the concerned university authorities.
I only pray that they wont ruin my career by rusticating me from the university.I feel demoralized ,alienated, demonized and decredited.Cant focus on studies ,make calls, and using a friends laptop to post.
P.S I am a proponent of Kashmir being an integral part of the Indian Union,or muslim lands being part of the republics they have formed a part of .

Taha feel lucky you are in India, had this been the Usa , i doubt you would have managed to post this during this hour. islamophobia in india is not on those levels and dont take the calling of your parents as offensive, it is good that instead of making a criminal case out of this they are just doing it at their level. Thank the Almighty and sleep a good night's sleep. Be polite and apologetic, this country and the government you chose is equally yours.
They will only ask your parents to focus on you to ensure you are not on the wrong side.Co-operate with them and things will be back to normal.

A "Rambo knife" is not a sword. In India, the law only grants exemption to the sikhs for carrying a kirpan and the gurkhas for carrying a khukhri. However, even in their case, keeping a kirpan/khukhri in a college hostel will lead to unpleasant consequences.Citing religious texts to justify stupidity will not get you anywhere.I think you should add the Arms Act and Rules and the Cr.P.C to your reading.Might come in handy
Are you a foreigner since you say "...Indian university I am in"? That they have taken away your laptop and mobile seems to indicate that there is more to it than what you are telling us.
