Knives availability in India

IFG is a Nice Site for knife afficiniados like me. I would like to place all info possible on availability of good knives all over India in one place. So brothers, I request you people to contribute your wisdom over vendors offering quality knives in this forum, so that every knife afficiniado is benefitted.

First, some Info from me.

I found a shop in the first floor of Esteem Mall at Hebbal in Bangalore selling adventure gears. They had the Bear Grylls Knives from Gerber and other Bear Grylls adventure gear/products. They had the Bear Grylls Ultimate, Bear Grylls Folding Sheath, Bear Grylls Scout and Bear Grylls Compact Scout. Further, they had Muela also - Muela M5161, Muela Kirpan and other small Muelas.

Hi brothers .. I will be visiting Amritsar to have a darsan of the Golden Temple. I am expecting to purchage a few knives from there. Any advise in this regard will be highly appreciated.

Hi Pradyumna,

I've been there once and there are a lot of shops selling local made swords, kirpans and other edged weapons. If u wish to buy one, bargain your hardest for a best deal. I think I saw a Katana also (probably one of those decorative ones).

Gerber-Bear Grylls Ultimate is tagged at around Rs.7000/-, Gerber-Bear Grylls Folding Sheath at around Rs.4000/-, Gerber-Bear Grylls Scout at around Rs. 3000/-, Gerber-Bear Grylls Scout Compact at Rs. 2100/-, Muela M5161 at Rs. 2500/- and Muela Kirpan & Others at Rs. 1400/-.

These were the prices which I found on the MRP tags. I couldn't judge whether they were reasonable or on the higher side. I'll try to confirm the exact cost of all this when I visit there next time... Ciao

How's the build quality on the BG Ulimate, it seems a bit expensive as a few bucks more can get you the Superb Gerber LMF II. You can always go to 20 North and check the approx landed price in INR including all duties, taxes and shipping charges.....

I've seen the shops around the Golden Temple, the swords and Kripans leave a lot to be desired but you can get some very nice Leaf Spring Khukries from these shops.

Yep, I checked 20north as suggested by you and it quotes Rs. Rs.4748/- after 25% off (Rs. 6315/- actual) for the Ultimate, Rs. 2248/- after 31% off (Rs. 3233/- actual) for the Folding Sheath, Rs. 3153/- after 19% off (Rs. 3873/- actual) for the Scout, Rs. 1407/- after 32% off (Rs. 2042/- actual) for the Scout Compact.

They may be on the slightly higher side at the shop that I said, but think it is worth paying that edge while comparing the feel of just going to the shop and taking it straight away than ordering it online and waiting for days to see it... Passion, man, passion.

What a rip-off. The Ultimate costs a mere $45 at knifecenter, and FedEx charges are $30 = total $75 (~Rs. 3600). Even adding duty won't take your cost to Rs. 7000. The problem with Indian shops is they get stuff at discounted rates, and try to sell them at full MSRP as specified by the American manufacturer. Only the foolish can fall for such tactics, IMHO. KnifeCenter is a very reputable and reliable source of all knives, and the best to get something shipped to India. I have ordered quiet a lot of stuff from them, and everything reached in time, and mostly without duty.

I am not sure why so much hooplaa about Bear Grylls knives - IMHO, there are much better knives available than this junk from Gerber at the same price point. Gerber cashed on his TV series, but sadly these knives are not the ones that will allow you to really survive. The material used is of poor quality as well. Any knife that is vague about the exact steel used is not reliable, IMHO. All good knives explicitly state the steel, the RC hardness, and possibly some other parameters like edge retention, etc. For eg., take a look at the SOG Seal Pup - it retails at almost the same price as the Ultimate, but is far better than the Ultimate in all respect.

As far as the knife availability in India is concerned, it is none for reputed foreign brands, and some for stuff of Indian origin (most utter garbage).

What I say is rather than just walking into any shop (in India) and paying a high price for some highly advertised knives (highly advertised but not highly recommended and from just 4-5 miserable styles) it is much more interesting to research and find what you really like and then pay the price for it, whatever it may be, and then wait for days to see it. The whole process is lengthy and not easy for most people here, still they do it and in fear that their knives might be confiscated by the customs etc.

Agreed bro, but it always feels great to have the article in my hand to see for the pros/cons, rather than viewing on my computer screen and reading stuff written by people...

Only a few here on IFG have access to shops (in other countries) selling knives and weigh the pros and cons by holding it in their hands and they do not have to order online but for others I guess they do not want to be limited to what is locally available in India and rely on their computer screens. You have to first understand how it is in India before giving out a judgement.

I for one appreciate and respect what people here do with the available means and resources to get what they have set their sights on. It is admirable.

I am not saying that it would not be better to first experience and test the knife by holding it in your hands and then choose the one that you want to buy but the selection here is very limited and that too to some very mediocre pieces.

As for reading stuff written by other people: that what we all are doing here and at most times you can rely on an honest opinion from a person with good judgement. That is what you have also asked for in your post I guess.

I am not being critical of you and you will soon realize what I mean and how it is here with reference to knives etc..

Dear Rajat,

I appreciate your views. I can understand that you are not being critical of me. I know how it is here with knives. It took me years together just to find shops selling stuff like that and I am happy now that shops are coming up which try to put up some stuff better than the gawdy ones we used to see in the Indian shops..
