import of kabar knife to india

hi everybody,
i want to import a kabar knife to india;recently i contacted the company.
they asked me to first check if the customs in india allows me to bring in the knives.
can any boby tell me the procedure to clear it through customs(do they allow it or not),what are the formalities needed.

Get it shipped through a decent courier and they will handle everything. You do not need to get involved with the customs etc.

Not very difficult Jashan with the blade length less then 9". If it comes as a gift and is within Rs.12,000/(not sure though) including freight, no duty charged. If sent directly to a customer, they add 20% duty on the total amount. But, be prepared to wait for it ...maybe a month or more after it reaches Indian coast. My Kabar (US Army) arrived on 13th June'11 in Mumbai Customs (foreign mail dept.) as per the seller's info in the US, but I got a show cause notice by post on 25th July. That was because the intelligent folks around there went through the catalog with a pic of a 10" bladed knife that had come with it and smartly assumed the knife blade to be illegal. Got it eventually but the blade wasn't razor sharp when I received it (Ogres must have got tempted to open a few difficult packages with it) got it back to required sharpnessall though with a few expert swipes on the Wishita stone but luckily it came with no aesthetic damage.

you have actually imported a kabar knife, can you tell me the exact procedure from the starting i.e from the mode of payment made to the seller.
did you buy it from tomars kabar?
what was the name of the courier co.
can you also give me the breakup of the tatal cost.

Yes Jashan, It was bought through Tomars Kabar and was sent to me by USPS. I am not sure but I paid something like $46/= for the knife and another $45/= totaling around $91/= or somewhere around it. The payment was through PayPal and ended up paying Rs. 500/= to the postman as import duty. Hope this helps.

I purchased 2 Ka-bar from care2india online through ebay. Luckily that time they were offering this scheme of no shipping cost only custom duty. So I got it for reasonable rate. Now that their scheme ended. I am waiting for more offers on ebay so that I can purchase some more Ka-bar knives specially the big brother

The blade length beyond 9" renders The Big Brother Illegal for import, unless one has some sort of clout or any other source to hoodwink the authorities.

hi i recently viewed some SOG knives, Got a big crush on Jungle Warrior and revolver seal.
i checked for their dealers in india, got an email,mailed them bt still awaiting reply.
guys how are SOG knives?
does anybody has an experience with them?

Local machate baught from some local market. It was purchased almost 20 yrs back for cutting coconut when I was in port blair. Right now it might be somewhere in junk with everything rusted. I think even in delhi buying a machate from some local shop is not a big deal. But the kind of low quality steel used by these local vendors is nothing compared the Legandary brands like Ka-bar, Cold Steel and Ontraino

hi,although offtopic,just replying on your post..
SOG makes good knives...mainly uses AUS8 japaneese steel.I got some knives and some of them are made by SOG ,heres a pic of a seal pup elite in plain edge for your ref., no complains about quality,their sheaths too are well made and very well thought after.

Local iron smiths or nomads in northern India are very good at making various kinds of iron implements including knives, choppers, khukris, axes, spear heads etc. from old leaf springs of automobiles. Since leaf springs are made of relatively high quality steel, the implements made from leaf springs are reliable enough for all practical purposes. Such implements are also commonly available in bazaar shops selling these kind of hardware.

agriculture tools are (exempt) from the ACt, so the length does not matter.

Yes agricultural implements are exempt from Arms Act 1959. Also for arms other than firearms, they are also not under the regulations(requirement of license etc.) of Arms Act 1959 unless there is a notification issued by the Central Government under Section 4 of Arms Act 1959 for that specific area.
