Winnie,
This is the pearlite in damask. However, 'wootz' is the actual steel. Very difficult to identify unless one knows what he is looking for, and from photos in the link I cannot make out. However, this is still being made in Udaipur and Sirohi. I have had quite a few swords made from wootz with both the pearlite and cementite showing, in effect, like salt and pepper. The hindi/ gujarati/ mewari term for this is 'sakela'. Have given order for a 'khanda' to be made from wootz and damascus currently to a swordsmith in Udaipur.

'wootz' in itself is a dodgy term in that that some experts say that the original wootz recipe is lost to time and others say that it wasnt a big deal and can be made easily but takes a bit of time.
Others say there is no need since the modern steel is of superb quality anyways.
I personally like 'jauhar' in steel.
Thanks for the link.

Great work! I guess this is as close they can get to the original Persian / Mughal blades now. Picture # 2 is a good example.
This is not the typical Damascus / Sankela that is produced commonly.
