bowhunting
How is bowhunting of endangered species legal in Africa? Hey guys, I recently ran across a website for a bowhunting safari company in Zimbabwe and Nigeria. They provide 'outings' for bowhunters ann allow them to kill animals such as White Rhino, Lion, Leopard, Elephant, Dik-diks, Jackals, Zebra, as well as many other kinds of animals.

Hello Marsha
Even if its a compound bow, I cannot figure out how you can take out an elephant leave alone a rhino. Still if somebody here has more knowledge on the subject please do enlighten us.

Re: bowhunting
yes, In Africa they issue license for hunting big 5 ( lion, the African elephant, the Cape Buffalo, the leopard and the Black Rhinoceros. The members of the big five were chosen for the difficulty in hunting them and not their size.)marshaa wrote:How is bowhunting of endangered species legal in Africa? Safari Club International, an organization dedicated to trophy hunters, offers a trophy for hunting all five species, called the "African Big Five Grand Slam," along with 14 other Grand Slams for other species, and a total of more than 40 different awards.

But for bowhunting, u have to put them email. I am sure that must be there.

Regardless of what you think, all the legal angles are usually explored before a company would want to put up a website/ad-especially where hunting is involved.
Most times, the money/fees involved are in thousands of dollars and bow hunting big game has been legal in many countries. These are not fly by night 'Learn MBA in English in 6 month " type operators from Madanpur khader
Can you please put up the link to this particular web site?
AFAIK, jackal, zebra etc are NOT endangered. Skillful game management and an ACTIVE hunting program has kept numbers high enough to warrant a commercial interest.Unlike India, where the tiger has been nearly wiped out in declared sanctuaries 35 years after project tiger and other grandiose schemes, including a complete hunting ban, reducing ammo quota to 5 rounds a YEAR in some states and the usual apathy induced babugiri.

Re: bowhunting
In 1980, right after I finished my HSC in Mumbai, my father retired from the army and accepted a job in Nigeria. We moved there in the late summer of that year. Something seemed really strange about waking up in the morning and it took us several days to realize what was wrong; there were no birds singing in the morning. This was not that long after the Biafra war where one side had basically starved the other side out. I was very excited when we first moved there and thought I would see all kinds of animals and meet all kinds of new people. Unfortunately, I didn't see many animals (zip, zero, nada..... not even stray dogs running around) and didn't meet many new people. It was very disappointing. I was under the impression that a lot of the game in Nigerian sanctuaries were considered endangered so I was surprised that Nigeria was mentioned as a hunting destination. Apparently, there has been some recovery in that area. There was a large Indian community in Nigeria but thanks to my parents joining the Indian association there, we never socialized with anyone but Indians. When I came here, to the US, I made a very determined effort to avoid the Indian Associations in the various cities that I lived in. This allowed me to actually get to know Americans and through them I was introduced to hunting and was able to visit many different parts of the country and see more wildlife than I have anywhere else in the world, including India.
As far as bow hunting goes, I was under the impression that modern bow hunting methods were more popular with North American hunters. Certainly, bow hunting is practiced in other parts of the world but for sheer numbers, I believe North American bow hunters exist in the largest numbers. In fact, in many European countries like Austria, Germany, the Czech Republic, The Netherlands, UK, etc. bow hunting is illegal! As hvj1 mentioned, I too cannot imagine trying to take an Elephant or Rhino with a Bow.
Just his morning, a friend of mine emailed me a link about bow hunting. It does make interesting reading and I thought I would share it with you.

Re: bowhunting
50 % hunters in Africa are American.
I am sure a larger chunk of Bow hunters in Africa are from the USA.
Bow hunting is normally done at reasonably close range. Mostly hiding inside Blinds. At this distance a bow (eg the Michigan Girl shooting a Black bear from 16 yards) shot at a vital organ can be lethal.
But getting an Elephant or a Rhino with a bow would not be easy at all.
marshaa,
I am not surprised to see these animals on the hunting list. The trophy fee for the Big 5 is rather high. There are not many hunters who can afford the hunt.
In the days Shikar was legal in India......we had our very own Big 5.
The Tiger , Elephant,Leopard, Buffalo and Gaur.
Though India also had it's Lions (Asiatic lIons ) and Rhino (One horned) , their hunting had been banned by Lord Curzon much earlier. While Curzon refused an offer by the Nawab of Junagarh to hunt the last few lions and requested him (the Nawab) to save the species instead. The Rhino was saved by Lady Curzon who influenced her husband to put a complete ban on Rhino hunting after a visit to Kaziranga.
The only other person (apart from Curzon) who had such an strong and positive impact on our wildlife in recent history was Mrs Indira Gandhi. The lady who banned Tiger hunting and brought them back from the verge of extinction. I hope our leaders today have the same will and motivation to save the most beautiful of all animals ......The Tiger.
and by the way......Dik Dik, Jackal and Zebra are not endangered.

The Tiger back from extinction my foot, there are more tigers poached in india than anything else and the bloody gov does nothing, they do not even pay the guards enough for a descent living.
the whole country is corrupt to the core.
It is possible to hunt elephant with a bow but you need a bow with atleast a 100 lbs draw.
Many people have done it and still do it.

Bow, gun, endangered or not. What difference does it make. Why kill these magnificent animals?

Re: bowhunting
I was talking about Mrs Indira Gandhi's contribution in putting a ban on tiger hunting at the right time. She was also instrumental in starting "Project Tiger" in India. India had lost more than 3000 tigers in only a decade due to hunting (during the 1960s) and had she not put a ban way back in the early 1970's we would have probably lost all of them in another 10 years (with tiger numbers estimated at less than 1800 at that time) .shikari wrote:The Tiger back from extinction my foot, there are more tigers poached in india than anything else and the bloody gov does nothing, they do not even pay the guards enough for a descent living.
It is unfortunate that Today the numbers are even lower (about 1400) and whatever is being done is just not enough.

I'm more than happy, if the understanding it mutual. As I had said before in a similar scenario, if the icon can be used for the opinion Rajat had shared, it can be used for such threads too. By the way, we can never call such topics "to closure". They are still open and I think all the members enjoy equal rights to voice their opinion in the debate.
