Importing Knives into India

Hi,
One of my friend might be traveling to Nepal this month. I was planning on getting a Kukri from there. Just wanted to know, if anybody here knows what the legal procedure is to get a knife across borders. Is it taxed? What %? and if the knife length needs to be regulated!
I read somewhere on the forum that anything over 8" needs a license for me to own it!
Also is there a limit to how many knives I can get? I was planning a Kukri and a couple of small fancy knives (my friend said some names, can't seem to remember them right now).
Hope some here can help me out with this info
Thanks in advance...

Please visit: Indian Arms Rule 1962, Schedule 1 - Category V
http://www.abhijeetsingh.com/arms/india ... ule_I.html
“Arms other than fire-arms: Sharp-edged and deadly weapons, namely: swords (including sword-stick), daggers, bayonets, spears (including lances and javelins); battle-axes, knives (including kirpans a Khukries and other such weapons with blades longer than 9" or wider than 2" other than those designed for domestic, agricultural, scientific or industrial purpose, steel baton; "Zipo" and other such weapons called "life preserves"; machinery for making arms other than category II; and any other arms which the Central Government may notify under Sec. 4.”
i.e. in general, knives having blade length longer than 9 inch & wider than 2 inch are not allowed to be imported. You can easily go ahead if your chosen knife is below the above measurements.
for more visit this thread, it does no matter by which rout you are importing, rules are the same

Spoke to my friend and he is a Nepali and has a permit and apparently he has no issues transporting the Kukri... Not sure how the rules play out in this case, but all he said was "don't worry, I bought it across borders a bunch of times"!
All is well that ends well right

perhaps it can be all right as long as it fit into 9 inch & 2 inch criteria, because it is import. I got bigger kukri in Delhi, but the knife was not sharp and steel was not hardened by heat treatment, so it is just souvenir.

Do ask for a legitimate bill/invoice. I believe local products of Nepal are allowed into India duty free as 'Handicrafts or Cottage industry produce' There may be a limit to what you can get. Also most of the bills mention 'souvenir' and that may help.
