Three Cheers to you Sir .Like I said earlier, your works here have inspired the itch in me to try it out. Have'nt really given any thought on the handle yet. Have some ideas for the blade first. I want to add brass stiffners on the spine of the knife. Check this link out by Custom Blade Maker Gil Hibben who's done knifes for teh Rambo Series as well. The Brass Stiffners on teh spine will add the bulk and the polished golden metal will be a very nice contrast to the otherwise rough finsih of the rest of the blade.marthandan wrote:moin...thats a wonderful project that you have started.
please dont stop till you have finished...have an issue with waiting
my two cents: how do you feel about a slightly curved handle. greatly improves the aesthetics and handling of the knife. i would also suggest that you add a butt cap.
if its ok with you, i will make a leather sheath for it. all you need to do is send a cardboard model of the finished knife to me.
the orbital sander is a good choice for finishing and polishing. it removes metal much slower than a rotary grinder and hence gives greater control. not a good choice if you plan to grind bevels onto a knife blank. an angle grinder is better suited for the latter.
P.S. the dremel rotary tool is just wonderful. go for the Dremel 3000 or 4000 model. see if you have someone buy it in USA (HOMEDEPOT) and bring it down. the Dremel 3000 costs about USD 50~60 as compared to USD 120 ~ 140 here. you will need a step down transformer (cost ~ Rs.1000) to bring voltage from 240 to 120.

I did see some Bowies on the net with teh curved handle you are referrring to. I have an old broken deer antler lying around which I can probably try & use. Alternatively I was also thinking of using white Corian for the handle slabs (only becuase it is being used on my current interior site and is availble for free for all R&D ) I'll take some pics & post
I too was keen on teh orbital sander as it is so handy to use and small to store. I'm not sure though if the wheels for this type of work will be availble for the orbital sander. These are used on my sites for polishing of PU and Lamination done on veneers. I tried and is very easy to use and not that expensive to buy.
Since you and Bruno have recommended Dremel, I will have a quick Looky look to see if it's availble at Lohar Chawl.
And that's a very generous offer on the sheath. Will send you the blade surely, for a good quality sheath, but will also takee your guidance on doing it myself. Feed a man fish, you feed him once, teach a man to fish, you feed him for life....
Best Regards
