@Rajat, yes know of base camp but the nearest store is quite far away!

Miss3006 explained the rounded edge perfectly. I was talking about this only.

Hope I could click pictures of one of my Kirpans that has a rounded edge but it won't be clear in the pics.

Rounded edge appears more sturdy & would last longer.

Another thing, I need a leather cover for one of my Kirpans(6"). Any ideas on where to get?

.32 Yes thanks to the clarification by Miss3006 it is confirmed that the rounded edge is basically the convex edge in other words.

You will have to search for leather bag makers, sheath makers, leather artisans or shoe makers in your area and convince them to make a sheath for your knives. For the Sheath makers it will not be a problem but you will have to use some persuasion for the others.

There are other options too but then these will not be available locally in your area and the only way to make a good sheath is to leave the knife with the sheath maker for measurements.

Here, you do not have to worry about the distance now:

Base camp has come to your home: http://www.basecamp.in/categories/Victo ... 03722.aspx

The small sharpener I had mentioned is shown on this link.

Im trying to convince Victorinox to provide me a Sheath for my 6"blade. Muela has a similar Bowie knife which comes with a proper leather sheath. Victorinox is adamant & says sheath comes with knifes only, i.e. buy a knife & get the sheath. I asked them what if sheath gets damaged or lost, accessories should be provided as a back up. So, now they are thinking about it.

Also asked them if they cannot provide the sheath, atleast let me know of the vendor from where they procure. I could try & get in touch with the vendor directly & ask him for a favor.

In case nothing works, I will look out for local leather shops & see if they can manage the work. Im wary of the quality as the blade is very sharp & pointed, can pierce a poorly made sheath & cause safety issues.

Wouldn't the traditional wooden 'scabbard' with brass/silver in-lay work be a better idea. Iam sure there would be people in Asr ready to help. Have been eyeing kirpans for some time now and 'am pretty impressed by the craftsmanship of the cases. In fact that's the only thing one sees. Victorinox kirpans were displayed on simple but elegant stands. Dunno if these came with the knives. Remember having seen these with Capital Book Shop and Budhiraj's shop next doors in Chandigarh.

Yes, indeed I too thought about that. Also, talked to a few people(kirpan manufacturers in Asr) but they were rather reluctant. Still its a good idea & I will try again & ask different people, this should not be difficult for them.

Victorinox supplies stands for Kirpans but I don't want those. I want sheath/cover/case.

I saw Victorinox Kirpans at a store in sec.17(near cinema) but they had only the smaller ones.

Explorer Survival Knife 14" Overall Length Black 8" Blade With Survival Kit In Water Proof Handle

http://www.cheaperthandirt.com/DBA699-1.htm

With a 8" Blade and 14" overall length, the Explorer Survival Knife is capable of most any task when out in the wilderness. Aggressive serrations on the spine make wood cutting quick and easy. The hollow waterproof handle houses a basic survival kit with matches, fishing kit, and emergency sewing kit. A compass is set inside the aluminum pommel. The stainless steel blade virtually eliminates any risk of rust. A heavy duty 1000 denier nylon cordura sheath is included with the knife.

Apart from the Rat Cutlery / Esee knives I would go in for the Tom Brown Tracker for the kind of use you have mentioned

http://www.tombrowntracker.com

-- Tue Oct 05, 2010 3:21 pm --

Since the purpose you have mentioned will see a lot of use / abuse the knife has to be very strongly built so as to withstand everything you throw its way. I was just wondering that since it has a hollow handle what sort of a tang does this knife (Explorer Knife DBA-699) have and how will it stand up to all the use.

Specially since the blade is quite long and chopping and cutting etc with a longer blade will put a pot of pressure on the hilt / handle.

it has hollow handle, bit it is full tang knife. but i"m agree for survival knife last thing you want to see is blade broken near the handle. I had before one nice Russian hunting knife and used it for about 10 ears, then it broke.

Subal, I do not mean to let down your advice nor to challenge your knowledge but this knife cannot have a Full Tang since it has a hollow handle.

The term full tang means: that the knife/sword is one solid piece and the 2 handle pieces are pinned on to the blade, one on each side. This is the strongest of the tang types.

OR

The inside construction of the handle and the portion where the blade connects to the handle on a fixed blade knife is called the Tang. Full Tang is the strongest type of construction on a fixed blade knife and is apparent when steel is exposed all the way around the outer edge of the handle and sometimes protrudes out the end.

OR

It is a single piece of metal from tip to base but the hilt is usually encased. Scales (flat pieces of handle material, like stag, wood, or synthetics) may be affixed to the tang with rivets or pins. Alternately, the tang may be wrapped with braided cord or paracord. Injection-molded rubber (Kraton) or plastic (Zytel) are other grip options.

All of the above definitions are basically the same.

This method of production means that the sword or knife is stronger as it is a solid construction rather than a blade fixed to a base which can come off through wear or contact.

There are hollow handled knives which are made from 1 piece of metal and equally strong, however, technically they are not called a full tang.

Thanks for the input miss_3006 but here we were talking about a $12 Explorer Knife from Cheaper Than Dirt stores and not a Chris Reeve's.

I bet this Explorer knife is not "Crafted from a single steel bar, no Join..... no break".

My comment about the tang was with reference to this particular knife.

I bet you can distinguish between the two.

That is fine Rajat, took this opportunity to set the record straight. No ways a $12.00 knife made in China will take much abuse.
