Re: Types of Knives
An "Indians for guns" forum would be incomplete without an indian classification of knives.
Please bear in mind that over the last few centuries we have had cultural influences from other parts of the world and indians arms werent exempt from these influences. this list is certainly not exhaustive and additions are not only welcome but encouraged:
knives:
katar
jamdhar
jambia
khanjar
pesh kabz
bichwa
chilanum
khanjarli
bhuj
katti
churra
kard

I do believe that the only truly Indian sharp edged weapon is the Khanda. Not exactly my field, so could be wrong also.shooter wrote:An "Indians for guns" forum would be incomplete without an indian classification of knives.

Indians certainly used them to good effect even in modern times:-
http://www.britishbattles.com/second-si ... wallah.htm
In battle, at the first opportunity, many of the Sikh foot abandoned their muskets and, joining their mounted comrades, engaged in hand to hand combat with sword and shield. Horrific cutting wounds, severing limbs and heads, were a frightful feature of the Sikh Wars in which neither side gave quarter to the enemy.
In many instances the charges were delivered when regiments of Bengal Light Cavalry baulked at clashing with the feared Sikhs, leaving the 3rd to attack unsupported and against overwhelming odds, the officers and soldiers knowing the Sikhs gave no quarter and inflicted appalling wounds with their razor sharp kirpans.

Apart from Khanda, another Rajput sword "Sirohi" should also be included. I am not able to find any pic but it looks like Shamseer
Something like this

Re: Types of Knives
Yaj,
Thanks for the correction.Always thought that the talwar/shamsheer and all it's variations were derived from middle eastern swords.
Is it possible to illustrate the arms named?
