Very sound advice by everybody on the forum. Go in for a Victorinox SAK and pls don't try to flaunt it. At 19, carrying a knife may seem macho, but it doesn't take much time for an adventure to turn into a misadventure.
Regarding the quality of Victorinox, well Everest conquerors have used Victorinox to snap lines and thick tent covers to escape avalanche. Be rest assured of the quality.
Good luck and all the best for your studies.

Hey Buddy,
The least damaging thing that could happen to your knife in the hostel is that it could get stolen. At 19, there arent too many tasks that need you to carry a knife. And the most damaging thing could be that you could land up in trouble. Keep a Swiss Knife if necessary i.e. for day to day WORK.
Seriously, if you want to avoid attention (carrying knives at 19 can get you a lot of unwanted attention) and still want to keep a surprise for nasty seniors in a knuckle conversation in the canteen (some of us have been there), there are much better options. The basic rule of engagement is that if there is a weapon that you draw, you MUST use it. If you cant, it is going to be taken away and used against you. Are you prepared to use a knife? I seriously hope NOT. It is good to keep a knuckle conversation non-lethal unless someone is trying to send you to a canteen in the sky.
You could keep a small nunchaku tucked in the small of your back under your shirt (learn how to use it), or a simple knuckle duster, a kubotan, a weighted belt - this is a nasty thing I made in College and needs a simple metal square to be stitched in between the seams of the army canvas belt...works like a charm if you swing with precision. Basically use your imagination. Anything can be made into a weapon.
Enjoy your college life. Sometimes you will be surprised how conflict free it can be

Welcome to IFG Botoi (wonder what that handle means though).
If you love knives keep one with you by all means. BUT,like all my esteemed colleagues have rightly said; check the legality/practicality aspect of carrying or keeping one in your hostel.
So, I wont preach to the choir any further. Just keep it simple and go for a decently priced one which wont burn a hole in your pocket (unless you have really deep ones) . Go for a simple folder or a Swiss Army knife. A fixed blade doesnt quite fit the 'utility profile' in your current 'profile' .
Stick to pepper spray as you have rightly determined, for self defence when the Manure hits the fan or someone wants to send you to the "canteen in the skies".
All the best, be safe and enjoy your college years( they dont last long )

Very true. Depends on who you hang out with as well. I used to hang out with a really NICE bunch and was never even ragged.slingshot wrote:Sometimes you will be surprised how conflict free it can be
