Moin, I will be honest with you, I cannot comment on the Lansky since I have never used it. Truth is never had to, ever since I bought the Spyderco I put aside all my other Sharpmakers. Due to its ease of use and adaptability I did not use or buy any other sharpener. Sometimes when a much coarser grit is needed I do use other systems. It can be used for practically all blade types including most serrated ones and also pointed things.

As for your question: it has three settings 30, 40 & 12 degrees + it has a setting for laying the stones / rods flat too like an ordinary bench stone. I have never used the 12 degree setting. Now since the angle is fixed you have to hold the blade straight and vertical and just pull it in an arc and the rest is easy. You do not have to worry about maintaining the angle as long as you can hold the knife straight. Of course it is not a guided system but it is fairly easy. Like I said earlier: do it a couple of times and it is enough to learn how to use it. You do not need hours of practice.

Anyway this is just my personal opinion and what I feel is easy for me to use. You are the best judge as to what may be the most suitable sharpener for you.

Moin, the Lansky has one major limitation, it restricts you to it's four fixed edge angles. A better alternative to the Lansky, which does not cost as much as an Edge Pro, is a KME knife sharpner. I have been using this since last October and I am satisfied with how it works. http://www.kmesharp.com/

Actually the edge of knife is to be very precise from the cutting point of view so you need to have the the corundum stone for the grain size of 1400-2000 actually these are being imported from out side countries like KOREA,JAPAN,GERMANY,ITALY etc.

For the polishing of plastic injection molds these kind of stone are only available in good tool rooms if any body is interested then I can send you some of it and this you must keep it in mind (no money required )

In tool room what happens once the stone is used it is useless for us but the sharpening of knife its very good as the grain size is of high density.

The second question of holding the knife for sharpening purpose is 45deg-60deg usually the edge is being grounded at this angle usually.

If you count from 90deg then the angle will vary from 15deg - 30deg as per words of Mr.Rajat ji in the above post.

very shortly I will give the details of the stone and the traders to contact for the same usually they sell the imported mold making accessories for the tooling industries.

Lots of times I have seen people use Silicon Carbide Wet & Dry Sand Paper 600 Grade for effective sharpening.
All that is required is a SC paper- flat surface and water. Brings a sharp edge quickly. This is a rough and ready remedy in a jiffy.

Dear Sir,
Vijay ji,
If you talk of 600 grade paper this will ruin the finish of the edge because this is very rough grade.
If you are a technical person then you can understand my point of view. If you say silicon carbide then I do agree with you but the grade of silicon carbide must not be less than 1500-2500(very rarely available)
all these are imported from out side, In our tool room also we getting it imported from out side for the polishing purpose.(plastics injection molds)

I just have a question - on using sand paper on a flat surface / carbide stone, etc., how does one hold the knife steady? If you are, say pulling the blade backwards towards yourself, your hand angle tends to increase, say you start at 30 degrees, you end up at 45 or so. I almost ruined a Nieto this way, inspite of practising on my showroom Kukris. I really feel the need for a guided system, which can hold the knife and sharpener at a constant angle. Best if the angle can be varied and set for different knives.

Request Mack The Knife to provide details of where I can get KME in India, I think you are referring, sir, to the "Knife Sharpening System standard kit", shown for $79.95 on the website. I tried DMT through e-bay and 20North, both "cannot send to India".

Cheers!

Got a Spyderco!!!!!! :cheering:
Through ebay.com (the US site). Pretty wizard job it did to the Kitchen knives (Godrej Cartini brand), and a Chinese-made duplicate multiblade. Will be trying out on the Nieto and the Browning next. The Victorinox does not seem to need any sharpening now.

Just a question, Rajat and other Spyderco owners - the DVD is not being opened by any of the programs on my PC, does it need any special program?
Cheers!

i have found some very interesting gadgets on this thread. however i prefer the local method of flint stone and water/spit to sharp up the knife, does a good job. cost zero and found everywhere.

There is 1 method which is very effective and tool is very easily available.

Just locate any porcelain mug or plate, on the base it will have ring which is usually not coated, use this for instant sharpening, it is very effective and sharpening last fairly long enough. The grade is very fine, hence, it will not spoil the finish of the blade also.
Its surface is even so it provides very even grinding
