I seriously doubt. What would a local blacksmith who lacks technical knowledge would know what a carbon, steel, d2 steel, or any other high quality steel, heat treatment or edge retention. They are uneducated, they don't know the knowledge or skills to make quality knivesgoodboy_mentor wrote:Sharp edged implements of all shapes and sizes can be purchased or custom made from local iron smiths. Local iron smiths or nomads in northern India are very good at making various kinds of iron implements including knives, choppers, khukris, axes, spear heads etc. from old leaf springs of automobiles. Since leaf springs are made of relatively high quality steel, the implements made from leaf springs are reliable enough for all practical purposes. Such implements are also commonly available in bazaar shops selling these kind of hardware. How did you get this?Details please.

I am not saying that local blacksmiths produce "state of the art" or of "ultimate" quality products as made by some branded manufacturers by using the "latest" scientific knowledge available. Local blacksmiths may lack theoretical scientific knowledge, but it cannot be said that they lack practical knowledge about the art of making reliable edged instruments. Most of the people in the countryside buy their requirement of edged instruments from the local blacksmiths and such products do serve them well. It was these very local blacksmiths who used to produce all manner of edged arms to equip the armies of the erstwhile rulers like Mughals etc.
As far as the quality of the automobile leaf spring steel is concerned, it is reliable enough for all practical purposes. Most of the choppers, knives etc. made for the butchers are made from automobile leaf spring steel by these black smiths. Automobile leaf spring is made from the steel that has enough tensile strength so that it does not break easily under stress.

You would be surprised at the quality of work 'some' smiths can do.Probably not in terms of final finish but certainly in terms of function.maverick786us wrote:What would a local blacksmith who lacks technical knowledge would know what a carbon, steel, d2 steel, or any other high quality steel, heat treatment or edge retention.
