Forgive my ignorance, but is hunting legal in India? I'm from the US and am simply curious about this. Thanks

I believe nilgai which is a bit larger than white tail, and Boar are allowed again. I might be wrong.

No guys hunting is banned in India except in certain specific scenarios where crops are being destroyed then the local farmer needs to seek permission from proper authorities..This is all very grey. In true sense banned.

In Punjab wild boar can be hunted in areas where they damage crops.However the meat can only be consumed by the hunter and party and can't be sold.

A lot of permissions required and the usual red tape to be faced when u need to hunt in U.P. not really feasible because it would at least take a year or so for the permissions to come in and then u still might end up being put behind bars at the fancy of some forest official or the other.NOT RECOMMENDED!!!

Wild boar are being hunted in western Maharashtra, there is a procedure for the same,this is as follows;
1. Farmer notifies forest Ranger regarding crop damage.
2. Forest ranger inspects the field makes a report.
3. Farmer is allowed to shoot or call for hunter to shoot the animals in his field.
Regardless of the above, poaching is on by enthusiasts, I have not heard anybody being booked under the Wild Life Act for the same. Usually a blind eye is turned towards boar hunting, specifically in the interiors. The whole village gets involved in the cleaning of the animal and the meat is distributed amongst all the villagers.
The Madhya Pradesh Govt. is also considering very seriously to allow Nilgai to be hunted.
