What makes it worse is that the population has been decimated not by the overseas sportsmen but our very own local rajahs / maharajahs / hunter / etc who shot the Tiger in an indiscriminate manner.

I think the main reason for such drastic decrease in tigers population in the rapid destruction of their habitat. Even at this time the size of jungles are descreasing and the govt. does not look serious to fix this crisis.
Cheers

The problem is further compounded by poachers who hunt these animals for all their parts which are used in exotic medications in the Oriental countries, where the demand for all the Tiger parts is heavy. It is indeed sad to see the Tiger population going down year after year.

I agree with MSandhu - the near total destruction of tiger habitat is the primary culprit... everything else adds up, but the loss of habitat means that nature cannot recoup the losses to poaching etc. as it normally would have done.
IIRC as of today less than 2% of India's total landmass is dense primary forest cover... the forest department insists on counting roadside trees and other such planted woods as forest cover as well to beef up figures, but who are they fooling?
Cheers!

There was a Mr. Cheeb in Govt. of India tourist office, NYC who used to arrange Tiger shoots through Mr. Shukla's Allewyn Cooper & Mercury and some other travel agents.
The days are gone, along with the Tigers.
A good account of all this is in the volume - Forests at Night by J C Scott, Jaico Publishing, 1956.

The census records clearly showed the reduction in the tiger numbrs during the raj was in British India and not princly india.
The numbers of tigers shot do not accurately reflect decimation.
A british officer posted in india for 2 years shooting 50 tigers was far worse than a maharaja shooting 300 in 50 years.

This happened as because neither the trees nor the Tigers enjoyed voting rights.

This sounds so cool and looks good in writing but isn't true.
Has voting gotten rid of corruption or got us better gun laws?
Similarly in lots of other countries both forests and fauna have increased despite not having a vote.

Guys its is a question of Morality which decides what is gonna be is store for a nation,we in India are Morally Bankrupt towards our duties to the national assets, its monuments ,our national assets, all our elected reps are interested in is looting the nation and till date they have done a great job,
even if the fl aura and fauna had lobbies they would have sold them off to the highest bidder, when guardians of the Tiger { read Project Tiger} sold of all the tigers at Sariska to Sansar Chand and his gang, along with Kanha and Ranthambore, what else can be expected here

It's time a 'green party' is set up in India and fights the elections.
