'Mickey' sets a few personal bests.

Post by Mack The Knife » Sun Jun 22, 2008 12:56 pm

It was the usual 5 a.m. start which brought us to Forbes Sagar by 8 a.m. with a stop along the way for some freshly made masala dosas and coffee.

The weather was a lot kinder compared to a week ago and expectations of a good day's sport were quite high. We set off in the coracle to spin for murrel as Pran was very keen on catching a few. However, after a couple of hours of baking in the sun (I had forgotten my hat at home) all I had to show for my efforts were two murrel and Pran was still murrel-less by the time we docked our coracle in the weeds to ledger for mahseer.

Image

Image

Pran switched to ledgering, whilst I plugged for mahseer. This resulted in Pran getting himself a nice Carnatic carp and I am sure he heaved a sigh of relief. ;)

Image

An hour or so of this and we head back to the car for Bana's culinary special - hotdogs and tea. With lunch out of the way, I assemble the casting rod and reel and show Pran how to use it. To quote him, "This is fantastic and I am definitely going to buy a casting outfit." Mark, are you listening?

Image

Pran still had murrel on his mind so we part ways with him going off in the coracle whilst I walk towards the end of Forbes Sagar to plug for mahseer.
An hour later my phone starts ringing. It's Pran at the other end and he's as excited as an excited thing can be. He's caught his biggest murrel to date. I tell him to boat the fish (they can survive for quite some time out of the water) so that I can take a pic of him holding it later.

I continue plugging for mahseer but only manage to catch another murrel. Perhaps, I need to tell the murrel that I am not paying through my nose for lures from Cabelas for them to chomp down on.

Image

An hour later the phone rings again. It's Pran again. He has returned from his mini murrel expedition and wants to know if he could come over and borrow the camera. This obviously was a polite way of saying, "stop plugging for mahseer and get your fat ar*e over and take some pics of me and my fish."

On my way back to Pran and his fish, I come across this old stone plaque more or less obscured by vegetation.

Here's our young champion with his prize catch.

It's time for high tea and out comes the flask of tea and hotdogs but much to my annoyance the ants had reached the 'dogs because some silly sod had not shut the box properly. :x

With low tea done with, we then proceeded towards our last session of the day.

Image

First catch goes to me. A small mahseer.

Image

Pran gets the next fish - another nice looking carnatic carp.

Image

I then hook and land three more mahseer and a Carnatic carp. No doubt I was being roundly cursed for hogging all the fun. However, I was distinctly lacking in sympathy after being deprived of my 'dogs.

We did have a few mild intermittent showers during the last session but that did not stop the fish from feeding and mother nature had an additional treat for us.

Image

The bites stopped with the setting of the sun and it was time to return to the car.

I have finally found a so-so dhaba so that is where we had our dinner after which Pran was introduced to some classic rock. The bloke definitely needs to be educated on the subject with Jazz and opera to follow. ;)

Grrr.. I'd guessed the subject would be something like this

Nice write-up and great pictures, Mack The Knife!

That's the first time I laid my hands on a Multiplier and was comfortable using it in the first few minutes. Will definitely pick one in the near future.

You forgot to add the bit about intoxicating the fish with nicotine before catching them ;)

That's it for now folks- watch this thread for more trip reports in the coming weeks!

Pran

PS: Mack The Knife, do mail the pics when you have time. Will frame a pic of the murrel to have on my desk at office :D

Don't be silly! All the expaarts, including Grumpy, have opined that a smoker handling bait will simply not have much success. ;)

WHOA that is a nice catch. Mack The Knife, you should publish stats on the fish man, atleast the big uns. Length, weight, type etc...Maybe a IFG hall of fame. I've mentioned this before, and I request the moderators to start one. Please.

Sharief,

There's nothing there that would qualify for a 'Hall of Fame' entry. Besides which how many members have you seen making posts on the subject?

There used to be very big mahseer on what is now known as the WASI stretch but they were dynamited out and it is only after WASI started guarding this stretch from 2005 onwards that the mahseer have started coming back. I don't know what their growth rate is but it will still be a few years before we start hooking into lunkers. Can't wait.

At this point of time, I am not keen on spending on a keep net, landing mat, weighing scale and sling. Whilst there is no denying the ego massage of catching a big fish, it pales in significance when compared to the sheer joy of being outdoors catching fish. These items also take up valuable space within the coracle. I have mulled over the possibility of buying a Boga grip (comes with an inbuilt weighing scale) but so far I really cannot justify the cost. For one we are not specimen anglers. We angle for various fish rather than just one during the 11 or 12 hours we are at the lake and that does reduce our chances of hooking into a big one.

Mack The Knife, I totally understand and I would not want you to add undue burden to your precious time on the water. There have been not more than 3 people (I think) who've posted fishing stories. I used to fish a lot too before my daughter was born, we went almost daily after work, atleast three times a week, got lots of catfish, Bass and Crappies. Now my fishing gear is gathering dust. Maybe after I'm done making babies and they're old enough, I'll start again.

In the meanwhile, you can maybe treat it like golf, keep score just for your personal improvement. In any case, like the King of Bhutan said, don't look at GDP, look at GDH (Gross Domestic Happiness), in fishing terms, I guess it'd be not the size of the catch, but the size of the fun you had.

"Classic rock", Mack The Knife??? Aren't "classic" and "rock" mutually exclusive terms? (Nice fish!) Cheers.

Shucks, since fishing stories aren't any good without pictures, that would mean I'd have to put my Leica aside and get one them newfangled digital things? That thought has actually occured to me once or twice. We'll see what I can come up with. Cheers.

You could always use a scanner but a digicam is a convenient thing to have around for quicker results. You could also have a photo shop digitise your existing pics. Since this has become quite cheap in India, I would assume it's even cheaper in the U.S..

Rather than just see the fish I am more interested in seeing the varied surroundings that other anglers fish in.

If you start a new thread telling us about the what, how and where, it would make interesting reading for quite a few of us.

Thanks.

Wonderful catch...
For Pran, well, he deserved it - had been trying for too long.
For Mack The Knife, well, all fishes look small when he holds them, so a big fish for Rustum should really be a very big one (Pun intended) :)
Great going guys :)
Pran, some feedback on your new chinese stuff?
