Hunting Season 2007

Well antelope season opened Sept. 15 and what a day. I had to work & didn't get home until about 4:30 PM. My wife wanted to go out for supper and we were supposed to leave at 5:30. That gave me one whole hour to hunt. I did go for a little while and saw 2 antelope. I was able to stalk them twice but never did get in position for a good shot. I even made it home in time for us to go eat. I just wish my wife & daughters would get ready on time. We didn't leave until about 6:30. Another hour of hunting time wasted.

Over the next few days I saw a few antelope and even managed to get off 2 shots. But nothing was brought to bag.

Yesterday was a different story. We were hunting antelope on some prime hunting land. It was raining lightly (not to last). We saw one doe antelope that I tried to get into position for a shot. I had to go up one steep hill and by the time I got to the top it wasn't raining lightly any more. It was raining hard mixed with sleet. That is frozen rain that is not quite snow. I found out the hard way Bushnell binoculars are not water proof. They still haven't cleared up today. Missed finding the antelope it was raining so hard.

Today was better. Until today I was using the .270 but today I decided to take the .375 H&H affectionately named El Troubador (spanish for the singer). We hunted for several hours and didn't see anything. Later in the day my friend got a shot at a buck & missed. Oh well. When we were going down the road we saw 4 doe antelope and tried to get to them for a shot but they gave us the slip or so they thought. We couldn't find them again but as we were coming out of the area I felt I should check this one gully (kind of like a ravine). There they were about 250 yards down hill from me. I signaled to my friends that I found them. I aimed for the one on the right and El Troubador sang his deadly song. I thought I hit her from the way she ran off. Sure enough she ran 50 - 75 yards up the hill and dropped. My friends tried to get up on the others but were not successful. The other three does that were with mine ran off & seemed like they wanted to come back to her.

Here is a picture of my antelope with El Troubador before I gutted her. The quality is a little low because I had to take it with my cell phone camera.

How long does a hunting season last? Do you have to register with the authorities before and after the hunt?

Hi Joe,

We have been discussing gut shooting on another thread and I am curious to know if that antelope was gut shot or is that an exit wound from a quartering shot in the pic?

Pran,
Season lasts for about another 2-1/2 weeks. I was in Strous Hill Hunter Management area so I had to have a special permit. Normally we don't. You just buy the hunting license & go.

El Troubador is built on an Interarms Mark X action & wears a Bell & Carlson synthetic stock.

That blood spot in the picture is where the bullet entered. It is hard to see but the bullet hole is actually on the front part of the spot. The bullet was a Speer 270 gr. BTSP. It went in just in front of her diaphragm & took out her right shoulder because she was quartering away from me when the bullet hit. So it missed the guts entirely. It surprised me that her lungs were tore up and she still managed to run 50 -75 yards.

I have 2 more licenses for antelope to fill. If I can get this one butchered and my work here at the house done today I might go & see if I can get another one.

I still have 2 more antelope licenses & one more deer license. Deer season has been good so far. I get to spend time with my brother and I shot 2 deer also. He has shot 3 and filled all of his tags. I will write more later but it is almost 11:00 PM and we just got home less than an hour ago from the mountain. I am tired with a capital T! Hope everyone is doing well.

isnt a .375 H&H a bit of an overkill for a pronghorn?
dont mean to be rude just asking for my own knowledge as ive never shot pronghorn.
